‘Orphan Black’ signed off on Saturday with an emotional finale for the Clone Club. But, while the series came to an end, questions remain for fans that, took to Twitter to farewell the beloved characters.
As the series came to an end, series creators and cast reflected on the finale and the possibility of continuing the story.
We can’t believe we had to say goodbye to our Sestras
After five seasons of an emotional battle along Sarah, Cosima, Allison and the resto of the club BBC’s Orphan Black‘ came to end on Saturday night. We won’t spoil much but will say that we saw the sestras finally freed from the conspiracy that has haunted and hunted them for five years.
*Spoilers ahead*
Helena delivered her expected twins, which were given some very interesting names. Alison settled back into suburban life; Cosima and Delphine were busy inoculating all 274 of the Leda clones out there. As for Sarah, she finally found peace with Felix and Kira.
The magic behind the show
‘Orphan Black’ was created by screenwriter Graeme Manson and director John Fawcett, starring the amazing Tatiana Maslany playing most of the characters in the show, including Sarah, Cosima, Alison, Helena, and Rachel.
The sci-fi series followed the Clone Club, trying to join the dots to figure out how they came to be.
Throughout the series, they discovered that an organization seeks to control human evolution through genetic modification with Project Leda. The cloning program aims to experiment with mutations that might allow people to live longer. They also discover how biotech companies use their investigations to harvest people’s genetic information.
Part of the success of the series is the fact that’s not only a brainy sci-fi show but has a heart, and with a rather emotional core.
It has the uncanny ability to show how the scientific is always political, that the political is always personal, and that just because something is technically possible doesn’t make it right.
Is this really the end of Orphan?
While the series ended on Saturday, the creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson are already talking about how eager they’re to return for a feature starring Tatiana Maslany.
“We’ve talked since the beginning of wanting to do some kind of feature or some kind of two-hour continuation of the series,” admits Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett.
When asked about how the story could take on Cosima and Delphine traveling the world inoculating all the clones they Fawcett said.
“Certainly I love thinking about where Delphine and Cosima are going to have to go and the kinds of women they’re going to meet in their journeys and their travels,” he said.
“We’ve spent so much time creating diversity in our Leda clones and making all these different individuals that represent all sorts of aspects of the world and culture and society that just thinking about that makes me think there’s all these other stories to tell.”
The idea doesn’t come as strange for the creators who first thought of ‘Orphan Black’ to be a two hours movie. But, as the plot continued to develop they eventually decided to make it a series. Series star, Tatiana Maslany, would also be down for a movie, she says it would have to be a different story that would allow the story to really develop.
“If we were to do a movie, there would have to be a really strong reason, I think, to do it,” she said. However, they don’t see it happening right now, but in the future.
“I don’t see that in the near, near future, but something that we’ve certainly always talked about and talked about as a group amongst the cast,” said Fawcett.
Emotional goodbye for the Maslany
‘Orphan Black’ has been one of a kind ride for Tatiana Maslany who brought to life the beloved sisters. The show even granted her an Emmy Award last year.
Recently, the star revealed which clone she enjoyed playing the most, and her answer came as a surprise.
“I enjoyed playing Rachel the most. She is completely opposite of anybody I’d ever be cast as otherwise. She terrified me constantly,” she says.
“Rachel was so different, so contained, so entitled and powerful and elegant, moneyed and all of that, which is everything I sort of judge and don’t feel connected to. So it was really fun to always find the empathy with her and find what the connection was there.”
But saying goodbye to Rachel, Cosima, Sarah, Alison, and Helena hasn’t been an easy thing.
“I’m so sad — I’m in denial that it’s done,” she tells EW. “And we’ve had to say so many goodbyes in terms of on the set saying goodbye to each character, and each clone as we kind of wrapped everybody.”
She also thanked the fan base for the incredible support and love.
“It’s all been so moving… This fan base has been so supportive and fans across the world have been supporting each other and taking care of each other… that’s just the coolest thing,” she added.
