As we salute a new presidential family, we farewell another one that almost feels like our own. Truth be told, we can’t help but feel this huge nostalgia taking over as we let go the Obamas.
This nostalgia also took over Jenna Bush Hager, George W. Bush’s daughter, who shared some rare photos of Malia and Sasha’s first visit to the White House. On Friday, Jenna graced us with this TB and a beautiful letter to the Obama girls on Today.
Bush Sisters’ letter to Obama Sisters.
Eight years ago, when the Obama’s presidential ride began, the Bush sisters wrote a letter to the new First Children. In the letter, they welcomed them to their new home and gave some advice regarding the huge journey they were about to face. Eight years have passed and they wrote the Obama girls a farewell letter. This time advising them on life outside the White House’s majestic walls. And it’s beautiful.
The very first meeting on a cold November day.
The letter starts like this, “Malia and Sasha, eight years ago on a cold November day, we greeted you on the steps of the White House. We saw both the light and wariness in your eyes as you gazed at your new home.”
And you know you’re about to get all the feels.
Traveling back to this unforgettable moment.
The Bush sister recalled taking time off from their work and traveling to Washington to give the girls a private tour in their new house. As they welcomed them in, they also farewelled their home once again.
Having fun with memories.
“When you slid down the banister of the solarium, just as we had done as 8-year-olds and again as 20-year-olds chasing our youth, your joy and laughter were contagious.”
Let’s not forget about the perks.
This tour obviously had some of the best parts of living in the White House. The Obama girls new home, included not so secret perks, such as the private bowling alley and a movie theater.
Wandering in the new home.
“The four of us wandered the majestic halls of the house you had no choice but to move into,” the Bush sisters wrote making a reference to the huge change that was about to come, and that they so gracefully mastered.
The Obama girls are full grown now
The once little kids suddenly turned into young ladies, full of incredible experiences from state dinners to the most intimate family moments while living in the majestic place.
Soon to be former First Children.
“Now you are about to join another rarified club, one of former First Children—a position you didn’t seek and one with no guidelines,” they wrote.
New adventures and experiences to come.
As they leave the White House they welcome a new life, a different one for sure. The Bush sisters then wrote about what’s to come in their new life, they mentioned the difficulties but also encouraged the Obamas to enjoy this new phase. “Explore your passions. Learn who you are. Make mistakes — you are allowed to” they wrote.
This experience made them who they are now
It hasn’t always been easy we know that for sure, but it’s an incredible experience that contributed and made them the women they’re today. Considering this Jenna wrote, “take all that you have seen, the people you have met, the lessons you have learned, and let that help guide you in making positive change.”
Proud, cool, and caring parents.
Jenna then talked about the challenges the parents- children’s relationship face when you’re the First Family. “You have listened to harsh criticism of your parents by people who had never even met them. You stood by as your precious parents were reduced to headlines. Your parents, who put you first and who not only showed you but gave you the world.”
