Liam Payne got rowdy on his solo debut. On Friday, the former 1D dropped his solo debut featuring Migos’ Quavo and is a brand new sound. The 23-year-old singer recently opened up about his music, his opinions on his former band members’ music and being a new dad.
Liam Payne talks about his new career
During the past weeks, Liam teased fans via Instagram with videos that totally suit the upcoming track ‘Strip that down.’ On Friday the highly anticipated debut finally landed and it totally delivered.
This way Liam has becomes the fifth and final member of One Direction to launch a solo career. and he’s chosen a sound quite different than Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.
The track, titled “Strip That Down” takes on a hip-hop inspired pop sound. It features Quavo, from the It rappers for pop collaborations Migos -who have appearances on Calvin Harris‘ Slide and Katy Perry’s Bon Appétit.
The anticipated track was co-written by Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac, during an interview on Sirius XM Hits 1, Liam said how the collaboration came to be.
“I was in L.A. at my house, and I got a call like ‘Ed Sheeran’s in the studio and he’s writing this song — it’s about you and it’s for you so come down and have a listen,’ ” Payne said. “Within 30 minutes, we finished it off. When you get to collaborate with people like Ed Sheeran, it’s great.”
News of the unexpected collaboration first surfaced last month when Migos reported being featured on Payne’s debut album.
More recently, Quavo revealed the pair had also shot the visuals for the single’s music video. “I just came from a video today. My boy Liam from One Direction. We just shot that. Crazy vid. Crazy visuals. Crazy team. Cool guy, nice guy. It’s goin’ up. I wasn’t even supposed to say that. It’s gonna be a surprise though,” he said.
So, an official video is coming, and is coming soon!
Exploring a new sound
Liam’s album is expected soon, though there’s no release date yet.The forthcoming album seems to go more in a hip-hop direction. During an interview, he discussed his new sound.
“I’ve been working hard in the studio for over a year and I’m really excited to share this new music with my amazing fans,” he said. “I’ve come a long way since our One Direction debut and I hope everyone likes my new sound as much as I do. 2017 has been a big year for me already and I’m looking forward to what the rest of it will bring.”
However, he’s taking it slow and has no plan yet for the over 30 songs he’s written.
“People do strange things with albums these days. Well, not strange things – very creative things,” he said. “They like to drop them in the middle of the night and you wake up and are like, ‘Oh, here’s a new album.’ Like do a Lemonade – just do a Beyoncé!”
Liam’s really honest about leaving the 1D days behind and going in a solo direction, with a 1D reference in the track.
He signs, “You know I used to be on 1-D / Now I’m out free / People want me for one thing / That’s not me / I’m not changing the way that / I used to be / I just want to have fun and / get rowdy.”
But calm down this ain’t a feud. During an interview on The Elvis Duran Show, Liam explained the lyrics.
“That’s been the best part of it for me just getting to go out and explore. That’s when I said the line in the song, ‘1D now I’m out free,’ just means free to musically go about. I’ve always been into writing,” Liam said.
“I wrote a lot of stuff for us 1D boys and I did writing for some artists as well. It’s been nice now that we can all go out on our own musical journeys and enjoy ourselves so it’s been a blast, it’s been a lot of fun!” he added.
However, the singer kept it honest when talking about his bandmates’ new sound. During an interview with Music Choice, he acknowledged how “great” and “cool” Niall Horan’s Slow Hands is.
When it came to Harry Styles’ self-titled album, Liam admitted is not his sort of music. “I’ll be honest with you, it’s not my sort of music. It’s not something I’d listen to, but I think he did a great job of doing what he wanted to do. That’s the way I’d put it best, I think,” Payne said.
About Baby Bear and not getting married
Liam and his girlfriend Cheryl Cole recently welcomed a baby boy. After a year dating the couple welcomed a baby boy in March, and after some though they chose the baby’s name.
“I said to her, ‘Look, you gave birth to him, at the end of the day you carried him around for nine months, I think you have the right to choose the name,’ he said. “So she chose Bear because she wanted a name that when he left the room that people would always remember and I think that’s true.”
Liam also opened up about their relationship and said the couple is not planning to tie the knot yet. “I see marriage as more of a religious thing and I’m not really a religious person, so I know it’s not really in the cards for me at the moment.”
He also said how incredibly supportive has Cheryl been on his upcoming album, “Obviously I’ve just started being a dad and also I’m promoting my single and she gives me no bother about it. She’s like: ‘You’ve got to go out and do your job, do your job.’ That’s how she is with it and Bear is beautiful. I love him and I miss him terribly. I can’t talk about him too much because it makes me sad because I miss him a lot,” he said. “It’s hard being away from your newborn son”
