Harry Styles First Solo Performance Covers Kanye West’s ‘Ultrilight Beam’

Harry Is Taking The Internet By The Storm With His Solo Career

Harry Styles played a surprise gig on Saturday, May 13 in London to promote his just-released self-titled album, and performed a version of Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam”, because why not?

The ex-One Direction just launched his solo career with his debut album ‘Harry Styles,’ released on May 12. To celebrate the occasion, he announced on Saturday that he would be playing his first gig ever that same day at The Garage in Highbury, a venue with a capacity of just 600 people. In a matter of hours, the £10 tickets were sold out.

“This is my first show in a long time,” the singer told the crowd as the show began. “My first show ever. So it’s a night I won’t forget and I thank you very much for being here with me.”

The singer played a version of “Stockholm Syndrome,” a song from the fourth album of One Direction, as well as a selection of songs from his self-titled album. In the middle of the set, Styles and his band started playing a guitar-based rendition of West’s “Ultralight Beam,” the opening track from West’s acclaimed seventh album, ‘The Life of Pablo.’ Check it out below:

Style’s self-titled album is set to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200

With his album released on Friday, May 12, Styles is heading to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, according to some industry forecasters. Sources suggest the album could earn over 250,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. only in its first week, with 200,000 or more of them from traditional album sales.

This forecast means that the singer could be on track to score the largest debut sales week for a U.K. male artist’s first full-length album ever – at least since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. Up until now, Sam Smith holds that record, with 166,000 sales of his album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ in its first week, back in 2014.

Moreover, if he debuts at No. 1, he will be the second U.K. male artist ever, since Billboard 200 was created, to reach that spot with their first album, The first artist? Ex-bandmate Zayn Malik, whose solo debut ‘Mind of Mine’ entered the list at No. 1 on April 2016.

The ex-boy band member is set to perform on ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ from May 15 to May 18. Later, he will be heading out on the ‘Harry Styles Live’ tour, beginning in San Francisco on September 19.

As for Kanye? Well, he deleted all his social media and is in a Wyoming mountaintop retreat working on his new album. You know, Kanye being Kanye.
