Bonnie Tyler is set to perform her hit ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ on Monday’s solar eclipse. The singer will perform aboard the ship Oasis of the Seas, giving travelers a one of a kind musicalized eclipse experience.
A perfect marriage of pop and science
On Monday, the Earth will experience its first total solar eclipse since 1979. The moon will move across the sun in a handful-in-a-lifetime moment.
Royal Caribbean International decided to make the moment even more special by bringing singer Bonnie Tyler to perform her hit ‘Total eclipse of the Heart,’ which fits the situation perfectly.
Tyler will be performing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” aboard the ship Oasis of the Seas. The eclipse will be positioned in the path of totality for the performance.
She will be backed by Joe Jonas, the lead singer of the funk-pop group DNCE, and they even rehearsed yesterday.
The collaboration will occur at the same time of the solar eclipse, which is expected to last 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
Tyler revealed that while the actual eclipse of the sun will last two minutes and 40 seconds, with a play time of over five minutes, her song is much longer.
“It had to be chopped because it was so long,” Tyler said of the chart-topping tune.
“I never thought it would be played on the radio, in the beginning. It’s a massive song … that you hear on the radio all the time, whether it’s an eclipse or not.”
A total hit
‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ one of the decade’s best-selling singles. It sold six million copies according to BBC. It also climbed to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 and was number six on Billboard’s Top 100 Songs of 1983.
“Total Eclipse of the Heart” was nominated for the 1984 Grammy award for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance”. While she lost to Irena Cara (“Flashdance… What a Feeling”), Tyler’s empowering, well-received live rendition stole the show.
She sang it as a duet with Canadian music star Rory Dodd, who was flawless on the “turn around, bright eyes” vocals.
Tyler pegged the song’s staying power to its evergreen quality.
“And you know, you can bet your life on all these talent shows — X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent — [it] pops up so often with the contestants.”
