Some Awards Commemorate Characters Who Have Marked History

Ava DuVernay was honored as the best animator of the year at the NAACP Image Awards ceremony. It focused on the power of the colored community to create change. DuVernay praised other stars of color on stage when she accepted her award on Monday night. She named writers and directors such as Gine Prince-Bythewood, Shonda Rhimes, Kenya Barris and Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler.

“This is our moment,” said DuVernay. “We can say that we were here when all this beautiful art was happening. That we supported it, we raised each other, did what Dr. King said we would do: live the dream, we are the dream.”

Anthony Anderson was the host of the night. He took charge of the ceremony held at the Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California. The ceremony was held on the day that would have been Martin Luther King Jr’s 89th birthday. The monologue was heavy charged with political comments. It mocked the presidential administration of the moment and of Omarosa Manigault. Others used their time on stage to encourage greater civic participation and the struggle for justice.

Producer Will Packer inquired into President Donald Trump’s most recent comments on immigration. The producer accepted an award for Girls Trip, which he won for a movie.
“Sisters, especially those of Haiti and Africa, we love them like their brothers,” he said.

Keery Washington, Laverne Cox, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lena Walter and Angela Robinson set the tone for the night they left holding hands in order to issue a dramatic call for the vote.

Supporting Time’s Up

The six women declared their support for the booming Time’s Up movement to stop sexual harassment and gender discrimination.
“Partial exams are a perfect time for us to use our voices,” Robinson said. “If we can regain a Senate seat in Alabama …”

“Then we have the ability to change the imbalance of power,” said Smollett-Bell.

Black-ish giving you to talk

Black-ish was the biggest winner of the night. ABC’s success was named best comedy series and received honors for acting for stars Ross and Anderson. “It’s extraordinary to be able to show what a beautiful black family is like on television,” Ross said.
Power also shone when it was named best drama series. The star Omari Hardwick was also the winner of the night, being named best dramatic actor.
Among other winners, we can name the talented actress Octavia Spencer and the star of empire Taraji P. Henson, who could not attend. Daniel Kaluuya, who received the award for his main role in Get Out, undoubtedly one of the favorites of 2017. The British actor was extremely happy about his victory.
“I don’t think he will be allowed to beat Denzel Washington in acting competitions,” he said. The 28-year-old actor thanked his mother and Get Out director and screenwriter, Jordan Peele. “A lot of people did not believe in me. You did, and you made us all feel included,” Kaluuya said. “Thank you very much for allowing us to be seen.”

NAACP President Derrick Johnson asked viewers to send text messages on their promise to vote in 2018 before presenting the President’s Award to Danny Glover.

Danny Glover was recognized for his professional contributions. Particularly for his work with the United Nations and his defense of the unions. He also spoke with emphasis on a Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi, where 80% of employees are colored. “Civil and labor rights have always been one and the same, “ he said.

Halle Berry had the opportunity to talk about the importance of presenting the NAACP Image Awards. Especially, on the day proclaimed by Martin Luther King Jr.

“We have to pay attention to his eloquent words. ‘Our lives begin to end the day we shut up about the things that matter,'” she said. “Today is a statement that we will never, never, ever shut up again¨. She alleged that she prayed and promised that if she could survive the streets, she would serve others again.
