Rihanna is on full Amelia Mode:
Do you remember the story of the famous American aviator, Amelia Earhart, well this girl, also known as “Lady Lindy,” became famous for being the 16th woman to have pilot’s license. She had several notable flights, becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928, as well as the first person to fly over both the Atlantic and Pacific.
In 1937, she mysteriously disappeared while trying to circumnavigate the globe from the equator. Since then, many stories have been told about her disappearance, there have been connected to various artifacts that have been found on Pacific islands—including clothing, tools and, more recently, freckle cream. Earhart was legally declared dead in 1939.
Riri’s latest fashion photoshoot is inspired in this amazing pioneer.
Rihanna Takes Flight
Most of us were familiarized with the story, but many don’t know is that Amelia Earhart explained, a few years before her disappearance, in 1929, how to fly fashionably in an essay for Bazaar.
So we weren’t surprised when Riri channeled the female pilot in looks that are utilitarian, modern, and sexy, doing a remake of the old photoshoot of Amelia’s essay.
Rihanna on Harper’s Bazaar
“There’s something so special about a woman who dominates in a man’s world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and the nerve to never take no for an answer. Amelia Earhart was such a dynamic force in her industry, setting multiple aviation records in her time. So it was a no-brainer for me to team up with Harper’s Bazaar in honor of a woman who held her own with the big boys.”
Plane Clothes
The main question on the essay was: what does the woman aviator wear? To which Amelia answered “Ten years ago I could have described a flying costume. It would have consisted of helmet, goggles, leather jacket, breeches, and some sort of high boots. There were no traditions but those of wartime flying to follow, and both men and women adopted or modified it to suit commercial needs”.
