The Joker And Harley Quinn Might Be Getting Their Own Movie

The New Banner Will Bring Unique Story Angles Without Affecting The Developing Ones

Warner Bros. and DC are working on an original film about the Joker. The project is still in the early stages. It seems it won’t feature Jared Leto, who last played the Joker, as Batman nemesis.

Reportedly the idea is to come with a brand new banner different from the DCEU already developed. This way the companies to explore different stories without affecting the current franchises.

The Clown Prince of Crime coming our way

News broke on Tuesday that DC and Warner Bros. are developing an origin movie about the beloved villain the Joker.

The studio has set ‘The Hangover‘s and ‘War Dogs’ Todd Phillips to co-write a script with ‘8 Mile’ scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips.

The Joker movie is to be the first project produced under a yet-to-be announced banner separate from the continuity of the mainstream DC Extended Universe. Which encompasses films such as ‘Batman v Superman‘, ‘Suicide Squad‘, and the upcoming ‘Justice League

The new banner is intended to bring unique story angles to the studio’s iconic heroes and villains, without affecting the already developing stories.

Meaning that Jared Leto won’t feature in the origin film, tho, he’ll reprise the role for the ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel.

The Joker has memorably been part of two Batman movies in the form of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger and was most recently played by Jared Leto in the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film.

The project has no title, cast, or release date announced yet.

Expanding the universe

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a possible project taking place outside of the DCEU. There could also be adaptations of other very popular DC Comics storylines that couldn’t happen in the current universe. For example: ‘Gotham by Gaslight’ or ‘Kingdom Come’.

More recently, last June it was recently revealed that ‘Kong: Skull Island‘ director Jordan Vogt-Roberts had pitched a ‘Superman: Red Son’ movie at one point.

Writer Mark Millar, who wrote the ‘Superman: Red Son’ book for DC Comics, had a very interesting Twitter exchange with ‘Kong: Skull Island’ director Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

In the exchange, Roberts revealed that he pitched a ‘Red Son’ movie to Warner Bros. several months ago and, they passed. However, Mark Millar revealed that the studio has since pitched the project to several other unnamed directors.

In case you aren’t familiar with the Superman: Red Son storyline, the book imagines what would happen if Kal-El’s pod has crashed in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas.

Under this new banner, something like that would actually be possible. It certainly does open up a lot of possibilities.
