Jason Momoa Removing The Stigma Of Aquaman According To James Wan

The Director Talks About Changing The View On The Character

Aquaman will make his first major appearance in the DCEU this fall when ‘Justice LEague’ hits theater on November. Then Jason Momoa’s Aquaman will take center stage when his solo movie premieres in December 2018.

And while there’s still a long way to go, information about the anticipated film is coming up as well as pictures of new locations.

Aquaman is coming

So far we’ve seen Aquaman in a cameo in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ and in the trailer for the upcoming ‘Justice League,‘ and truth be told we just can’t wait to see Jason Momoa picking up the trident and ruling the seas.

And we’ll see him, ‘Aquaman’s premiere in December 2018 will put on a sweat end to a series DC movie drought on the silver screen.

The story will hit the silver screen under the direction of filmmaker James Wan. Wan’s credits include ‘Saw,’ ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘Furious 7.’

“In a lot of ways, this is an origin story. I want the audience to experience Atlantis the first time Aquaman experiences it as well,” Wan said in the video during the San Diego Comic-Con.

“This is the reason for the theatrical experience.”

While few details are known about the plot of ‘Aquaman’ Wan has promised a “swashbuckling action-adventure. Sort of high seas adventure story” in the vein of 1980s classics. He’s also teased that it’s “ultimately a quest story,” but has yet to reveal what the object of that search might be.

The cast includes Jason Momoa as the titular King of Atlantis, with Amber Heard as his wife Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Ludi Lin as Murk, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman as Atlanna and Michael Beach as Jesse Kane.

New location and technical challenges revealed

News broke that the production crew has moved onto the next shooting locale. Hastings Point in New South Wales, Australia, to film the Curry Lighthouse in the fictional coastal town of Amnesty Bay.

So, we can confirm that Amnesty Bat will make an appearance in the hero’s first solo film. Spend some time with Arthur Curry’s dad, Tom Curry.

In the comics, the Curry family lighthouse is located off the coast of northern Maine in the town of Amnesty Bay. It was the home of fisherman Tom Curry, who met the teenage Atlantean boy Orin, a.k.a. Aquaman, and raised him as his son, giving him the name Arthur Curry.

Shooting is currently underway on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. There’s still extensive filming to be accomplished at Village Roadshow Studios. Filming will also take place in Newfoundland, Sicily, and Tunisia.

While the upcoming ‘Aquaman’ movie is still in the early stages of its production, James Wan has already admitted that helming the movie is a challenge for him.

In a recent interview, Wan, who is known for his expertise in directing horror movies, revealed the complexities of shooting “Aquaman.”

“It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on,” Wan told The Hollywood Reporter. “Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex.”

According to the director, the movie is technically challenging to work on as its underwater sequences are rather complicated.

“Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated,” he said.

“You have to think about CG with the hair, and how their clothing moves, how are they floating. What kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff.”

Wan goes on to say that shooting with water, practical effects and real actors “just makes it very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this.”

But Wan’s in for the challenge and hopes it will pay off.

Changing the stigma on the hero

Aquaman may be king of the Seven Seas in the DC Comics universe, but in the real world, the superhero has been the butt of jokes for decades.

However, ‘Aquaman’ director James Wan thinks Zack Syneder’s “stroke of genius” casting of ‘Game of Throne‘ alum Jason Momoa as marks a sea change in the perception of the hero.

“Momoa is not a guy that you would go up to and make fun of. I really think you immediately remove any of the stigmas of the character from the cartoons that we are familiar with,” he said.

Some of the other cartoon depictions are ‘Robot Chicken’ and ‘Family Guy’, which doubled down on Aquaman’s goofy perception. Running gags calling out his relative limitations in comparison to the other members of the Justice League.

“Having said that, I’m not completely unaware of the stigma,” Wan continued.

“If anything, I embrace it and being able to laugh at yourself and have fun at yourself is important, and that’s something I am aware of as I make Aquaman right now.”
