The biggest music and art festival’s back and this year looks huge! Yeah, Coachella looks really good this year with Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead and nothing less than the Queen Beyoncé headlining. Surreal!
The annual festival celebrated in Indio, California will span two weekends, from April 14 to 16, and then again from the 21 through 23. The festival will mark the return of some artists such as Lorde and Avalanches. To these artists, we add performances of TDCC, Capital Cities, Bon Iver, DJ Snake, Grouplove and many others.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Starting in 1999 and founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen, Coachella turns 18 this year and is a real classic. 18 years of the biggest and coolest alternative music festival of all. The festival features many music genres including rock, indie, electronic, hip-hop, that’s what I like to call integration. Also, is a huge display of art installations and sculptures.
Like this cool thing for instance.
Coachella 2017.
This year Radiohead, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar are headlining the event. Also, artists such as The xx, Empire Of The Sun, Mac Miller, BANKS, Capital Cities, Crystal Castles, Bon Iver, DJ Snake, Martin Garrix are performing in the event. Avalanches is performing after a long time apart from its US audience, it’s been 15 years since they last performed in the country. Another noticeable comeback is Lorde, who hasn’t performed since 2014.
Here’s this year’s lineup.
Let’s talk about the lineups.
The alternative, indie, pop performances.
This year’s pop and dance performances are brought by Lorde, Future Islands, Beyoncé, Tove Lo, Grouplove, and many others.
While alternative and indie artists include
The xx, Phantogram, Radiohead, Crystal Castles, Bon Iver, TDCC, Devendra Banhart, Local Natives, among others.
Hip hop and electronic.
These genres have the cool representation of DJ Snake, Martin Garrix, Kendrick Lamar, DJ Shadow, Gucci Mane, ScHoolboy Q, Future, Marshmello, Empire of The Sun and Galantis.
But that’s not it, the huge deal is the headlines.
Yep, the huge deal are the headlines for three reasons: one Radiohead’s back after their latest album in 2013. Two, Beyoncé, the queen is the second woman headlining the festival since Bjork. And three, Kendrick Lamar who’s REALLY cool.
Radiohead’s back, for good.
The British band is a must when it comes to alternative music, and when it comes to Coachella too. It’s the third time the band headlines the festival, back in 2003 and 2011. The band released “A Moon Shaped Pool”, which is their ninth studio album. The band spent much of 2016 on the road promoting their new album, and Coachella marks their first US date for 2017.
Their last album includes several songs written some years earlier
Dating from 1995 till 2008. It was recorded during two years, starting in 2014 and finishing earlier this year. It’s considered one of the best albums of the year and was claimed by the critics. They have two Grammy’s nominations for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song.
Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
Bey had an awesome 2016, “Lemonade” is definitely one of the top works of the artist. The sixth studio album made quite a mark not only in music but also in society. The album addresses important society issues in a way only Bey could master. Women empowerment, racism, equity, the beautiful portrayal of these issues made “Lemonade” a masterpiece. She has 9 nominations for the Grammy awards, including Album of The Year.
Now she’s having a great 2017 beginning with the huge news of breaking the ceiling glass for women performers in Coachella. The festival had only been headlined by one woman before, Bjork back in 2001 and again in 2006. So, now Bey is the second woman to headline it.
Way to go Bey!
Kendrick Lamar.
After the release of “Untitled Unmastered,” back in March, the rapper played some dates performing the songs of his album. The album consists of unfinished records from the recording of “To Pimp a Butterfly,” and debuted atop the US Billboard 200.
The rapper is no stranger to the festival. He made some rounds back in the 2015 edition. And is now coming back for the second round.
Yay Kendrick!
