Sooner than later, the ‘Top Gun’ sequel is landing

‘Top Gun’ fans are finally getting a sequel more than 30 years after the original film was released. After many rumors and conversations about a sequel taking over in recent years, an official announcement was made setting a date to the long expected movie.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer took Twitter on Friday and shared the big news. The movie will be released in summer 2019. Specifically on July 12. Not much information about the production has been announced by the studio. But Tom Cruise is reprising his role as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and filming is set to being next year.

Jerry Bruckheimer is also reprising his role as executive producer, while director Joseph Kosinski will take on the direction of the film. Kosinski and Cruise previously worked together in 2013 ‘Oblivion’. Kosinski was reportedly the number one directorial choice for Paramount and Skydance Pictures.

‘Top Gun’ was directed by late filmmaker Tony Scott who died in 2012. The original ‘Top Gun’ was released in 1986 and made more than $350 million at the box office. Tom Cruise shot to fame playing a fighter pilot in the 1986 movie, which also starred Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’

While the studio hasn’t given away much information about the upcoming movie, Tom Cruise can’t hide his excitement and has revealed some information. In an interview with Acces Hollywood, Cruise teased the film in the interview, saying, “Aviators are back, the need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one … but a progression for Maverick.”

The actor also said that the movie will portray ‘Maverick’ in the modern world of drone technology.

“When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored,” he said.

The actor also revealed the title of the film. And the sequel is not getting a number, in fact, the actor vetoed that option. “I didn’t want a number,” he said. “You don’t need a number.”

Instead, it’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’
