Nick Mason Pink Floyd’s Drummer Would Very Much Like To Play Drums For Harry Style

He Says He Felt A Pink Floyd Vibe In Harry’s New Music

Pink Floyd is one of the most iconic and fundamental bands ever. As they were music pioneers and helped shape Rock & Roll. The reason why its drummer Nick Mason is so important. Also, he is the only member of the band that has featured on all their albums. Obviously, Mason is a huge music fan, and recently he has stated that he would like to play along with Harry Styles, the former One Direction. Admitting he would also like to participate on his future records.

Mason might not receive all the attention David Gilmore or Roger Waters usually have. But he co-wrote some of Pink Floyds most fundamental compositions like “Echoes” and “Time”. He is way more than a great musician, he is a great race car fan. Mason was acknowledged on 2012 as an Honorary Doctor of Letters, by the University of Westminster. While he also had studied architecture at the University’s predecessor, Regent Street Polytechnic from 1962 to 1967. Besides, he has published a pair of books and produced tons of records.

Getting into Harry’s style

Recently the former One Direction star went solo. Releasing his self-titled debut album, on May 12th, with his promotional single “Sign Of The Times”. To promote his new record Harry Styles went to the “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show,” on BBC Radio 2. Along with Harry was the former Pink Floyd drummer.

During the show, Mason said he first listened to Styles’ promotional single on the radio, and that he liked it. Thinking he could play along with it, as he felt a Pink Floyd vibe. Mason said: “I happened to be driving along and I heard Harry’s single. I listened to it and the DJ said afterward, ‘It sounds a bit like Pink Floyd to me’ and I thought, ‘Yeah, I could play that’. I listen to music on the radio in a particular way, which is [in terms of the] drums and bass. My belief is that bands are made up of bass, drums and a bunch of novelty acts. Anyway, I heard [Style’s single] and I thought I’d ask Harry if I could play drums on a track on his next album“.

Styles was honored about Mason’s proposal

Needless to say that Styles was honored, and replying “I would say yes”. As he also added that Mason could join on his tour if he had the spare time. Besides that, his tour drummer wouldn’t mind sharing the drumset. “My drummer Sarah [Jones, former New York Pony Club/Hot Chip drummer] is actually a major fan of yours”.

Styles’ No.1 single “Sign Of The Times” has a dark and political background. As it talks about is about Brexit, Trump’s rise to the U.S. presidency and the Black Lives Matter movement. Since all these events influenced his writing process.

As Harry explained “We’re in a difficult time, and I think we’ve been in many difficult times before. But we happen to be in a time where things happening around the world are absolutely impossible to ignore. I think it would’ve been strange to not acknowledge what was going on at all. For example, ‘Sign of the Times,’ for me, it’s looking at several different things. That’s me commenting on different things. It’s very much me looking at that. A time when it’s very easy to feel incredibly sad about a lot of things. It’s also nice sometimes to remember that while there’s a lot of bad stuff, there’s also a lot of amazing people doing amazing things in the world“. Styles will also feature in the upcoming Christopher Nolan’s WWII film, Dunkirk.

In the meanwhile

Recently Mason was involved in a car crash accident. Since he crashed his rare Formula One car, a McLaren F1 GTR, into a tire wall. During the Goodwood Members Meeting in West Sussex, on March 21st. Luckily nothing happened to Mason, as he came out fine and uninjured. Not the same can be said for the car which is part of a limited series, where only 100 were built and only 28 were F1  were race versions of the street car built from 1995 to 1997.

Also, a tribute museum exhibition for the band has been opened in London, in order to commemorate the 50 years of the band. The exhibition is titled “Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains,” which is taking place at the London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. It opened to the public on Saturday, May 13th, and will be running until October 1st, taking back in the past five decades of the band and its legacy. The exhibit has over 350 artifacts, souvenirs, and objects, many previously unseen, related to the band and takes up 17,000 square feet.

Along with that, the opening was a “reunion” of the remaining members of Pink Floyd. Where the press asked Waters and Mason if they would consider getting back together to perform at the Glastonbury festival in Somerset, England. To what Mason and Waters replied positively, being the only obstacle David Gilmore. Who doesn’t see a Pink Floyd reunion happening anytime soon, especially due to his bad relationship with Waters. The band played last time together on 2005 at Live 8, when Gilmour and Mason joined Waters onstage when he played London’s 02 Arena.
