On Beyoncé’s birthday, Michelle Obama honored her recreating her ‘Formation’ look. Obama along with other friends got literally in ‘Formation’ to celebrate Beyoncé and support relief efforts in Houston.
Queen Bey spent the whole weekend celebrating and was honored by fans and friends via social media.
Get in ‘Formation’
It was good and appropriate to schedule Labor Day for September 4, coinciding with the national holiday that is Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s birthday.
Over the long weekend, Beyoncé turned 36, and not only was a large amount of the population able to take the day off work to celebrate, but some of the star’s closest friends and family also presented her with the grandest of gestures.
On Monday, a series of images were posted on Bey’s website. The pictures paid special tribute to Queen Bey and gathered friends and family donning the famous black outfit worn by Beyoncé in her ‘Formation’ music video.
Among the A-list celebrities were Michelle Obama and Serena Williams, who recently gave birth to her first child, who depicted clad in black off-the-shoulder dresses, statement bib necklaces, and wide-brimmed black hats. Just like Beyoncé wore in her ‘Lemonade’ visual album.
However, the amazing tribute was not only in celebration of Beyoncé’s 36th year but ostensibly in support of disaster relief efforts in Houston.
The message, which uses the hashtag #BEYGOODHOUSTON, includes a link to a separate page where supporters can donate to two non-profit organizations in Houston. Bread of Life and the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
“Join us as the BeyGOOD team heads to Houston to continue our relief efforts on the ground,” a statement on the page reads. “We have teamed up with Bread of Life, Greater Houston Community Foundation, and Texas Southern University, all of whom have been working with the displaced from the start of Hurricane Harvey’s landfall.”
“Your donations will help in long-term revitalization and aid in purchasing immediate needs including cots, blankets, and pillows, baby products, feminine products, wheelchairs and more.”
Even Jay Z’s mom took part on the initiative
It’s not just the former first lady and tennis star who participated, though: Beyoncé’s own mother and daughter Tina Knowles and Blue Ivy Knowles Carter, Jay-Z’s mother Gloria Carter, Beyoncé’s former bandmate Kelly Rowland, and her protégée Halle Bailey all appear in the photo series.
They’re captioned, simply, “Happy Birthday Beyoncé From Your Family and Friends.” And Beyoncé simply received their tributes on her own website, like a true queen.
Beyoncé and the former first lady have enjoyed a close friendship for nearly a decade. In 2008, Beyoncé performed “At Last” during then-President Barack Obama’s first inauguration.
Since then, Beyoncé has collaborated with Mrs. Obama on her “Let’s Move” campaign combatting childhood obesity. The then-first lady later returned the favor by appearing on stage during Beyoncé’s performance at the Global Citizen Festival in 2015.
In fact, the two women are so close that Beyoncé spent her last birthday weekend celebrating at Camp David with her mom and daughter, and Mrs. Obama and her daughters, Malia and Sasha.
Honoring the Queen
The pictures come a day after Jay-Z got the crowd at Made in America festival to serenade his “beautiful” wife with Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday.
While enjoying Labor Day weekend and celebrating her birthday, Beyoncé spent the eve of her birthday at the Made in America festival, the Philadelphia-based festival her husband, Jay-Z, founded six years ago.
Jay-Z and her sister Solange Knowles headlined the festival’s Sunday night lineup. The rapper took the time to honor his wife and present her a little gift.
Towards the end his set, the rapper offered prayers to Houston. Then led the crowd in two separate, enthusiastic singalongs of “Happy Birthday” for his Houston-native wife. The first, the standard party song; the second, the Stevie Wonder version.
While it was a kind gesture for her hubby, Bey made quite a splash in her attendance to the festival.
Queen Bey taking the lead
A picture of Bey and Cardi B backstage quickly went viral. In the picture, Cardi B’s excitement for meeting Bey is more than obvious. But there’s something else.
Beyoncé wore a Gucci jacket over her t-shirt and denim shorts along with a Gucci hat, but it wasn’t just any Gucci jacket.
It was the Gucci jacket that was first spotted on the runway at the luxury brand’s Resort 2018 show in May.
The same one that went viral due to its striking similarities to a jacket that Dapper Dan had created back in the ‘80s. The same jacket that actually was later revealed by Gucci that it paid homage to the Harlem couturier.
All the birthday toasts didn’t end there, that was just during the weekend.
Then on Bey’s actual birthday, on Monday, family and friends took to social media to paid tribute to the singer.
Throughout the day, Adele, Bruno Mars, Maisie Williams, and Chance the Rapper were all part of the chorus of “happy birthdays” that poured out across the internet.
