The first trailer for ‘Logan Lucky’ is here, marking Steven Soderbergh’s return to filmmaking. The whacky trailer, started by Channing Tatum and Adam Driver, shows Soderbergh’s taste for good old madcap plots.
Take a look at this insane trailer:
Soderbergh is known for directing acclaimed comedies like ‘Magic Mike’ or the remake of heist film ‘Ocean’s 11,’ and its two sequels. Now the filmmaker is back after a four-year hiatus with another heist comedy.
‘Logan Lucky’ follows two brothers, Jimmy (Tatum) and Clyde Logan (Driver) – who’s missing an arm–. Trying to reverse a family curse by doing an elaborate robbery during the Coca-Cola 600 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The trailer was premiered during the actual Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday in Charlotte. Soderbergh, as well as Tatum, attended the race. The Associated Press reports that NASCAR plays a major role in the production and promotion of the film.
This first teaser makes it pretty obvious that we’re dealing with a reckless comedy here. And of course, an all-star cast. Besides Tatum – who worked with Soderbergh in ‘Magic Mike’ – and Driver, the movie also features Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterston, Dwight Yoakam, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson, Hilary Swank, and a platinum blond Daniel Craig.
Daniel Craig’s role is the real scene-stealer
In the trailer, we get to see the English actor completely immersed in his role of Joe Bang, an explosives expert. Forget about the classy Craig you recall from the ‘James Bond’ films and prepare for the most stinging Southern accent.
When one of the Logan brothers gets fired from his job, they make a plan on how to make money. Their brilliant idea? Steal all the money that gets moved underground for the Coca-Cola 600, the biggest NASCAR race of the year. To accomplish that, they need the help of Joe Bang, who’s in jail, but they figure out the way of letting him out, and now have to deal with his eccentric personality.
To Soderbergh, the film is the opposite of the ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director referred to ‘Logan Lucky’ as “a complete inversion” of the ‘Ocean’s’ franchise. “It’s an anti-glam version of an ‘Ocean’s’ movie,” he said.
“Nobody dresses nice. Nobody has nice stuff. They have no money. They have no technology. It’s all rubber band technology, and that’s what I thought was fun about it. It seemed familiar to me but different enough. The landscape, the characters, and the canvass were the complete opposite of an Ocean’s film,” he said about what caught his attention from the script.
He also said that as much as he felt like it is a movie he would absolutely love to watch, or even better, to make, it didn’t feel like it was repeating the ‘Ocean’s’ movies. “It’s in the same universe, but in a different galaxy,” he added.
‘Logan Lucky’ will hit theaters on August 18th.
