Fighting evil and for representation.

The upcoming Power Rangers film is featuring a gay character for the first time in a superhero movie. This way the Power Rangers are not only fighting evil but also for representation.

According to early reviews of the film, Trini the Yellow Ranger, played by Becky G, reveals in one scene she’s having “girlfriend problems,” the film director called this moment “pivotal.”

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, director Dean Israelite discussed this, “For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

Give it up for inclusion.

Even when there are some LGBT superheroes in comics when it comes to the big screen the movies fail to show this side of the superhero. The news about the Yellow Ranger comes after Disney revealed Gaston’s sidekick, LeFou, in the live action movie of Beauty and the Beast, is gay.

For David Yost, who played the Blue Ranger the news was huge. Yost left the television show due to homophobic harassment from crew members.  He said, “They really stepped up to the plate. I think so many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation.”
