Sequels are not always successful. Especially when it’s a reboot of a classic trilogy. But the director of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” George Miller, proved that he could do so in a very spectacular way. As the 2015 film that took back the apocalyptic wasteland back from the 80’s endorsed up to $378.8 million worldwide. So he wants to do more and he is supposedly ready to deliver two more movies of the “Mad Max” franchise.
Also, the movie was critically acclaimed and it was one of the most praised ones that year. Even making it up to the Oscars as it was nominated for “Best Picture,” which it won, and “Best Director,” something very considerable for an action movie. Maybe this is the reason why he wants to do more?
Two more scripts ready
The success of “Fury Road” got director Miller wanting to do more ‘Mad Max’ as he had stated before. Although, he would like to work on a smaller project before jumping into a film of such a huge magnitude. Since “Fury Road” spent years developing before hitting the theaters.
In a recent interview with “The Independent,” Miller said that in his plans were to deliver a trio of “Mad Max” screenplays. Something that was in process since the development of “Fury Road,” adding two following movies after it. But these screenplays are supposedly ready. As Miller said that the fact that no one is expecting any “Mad Max” movie soon, gave him and co-writer Nico Lathouris the freedom to explore deeply the insane world and logic of “Mad Max”.
Perfectly planned apocalypse
As Miller stated on the interview. “We dug down deep into the subtext, the backstory of all the characters, and indeed the world…and without really thinking about it, we wrote two other screenplays just as part of the bible of the stories. Somewhere, if the planets align, there will be two other films.
A movie like Fury Road is told in a very wild, helter-skelter way, so the underlying logic of everything in the film had to be pretty rigorous otherwise the film would’ve been chaotic. So one of the advantages of the many delays was that we were able to spend time getting into these backstories”. But Miller isn’t the only one hoping for new “Mad Max” movies. Since lead star Tom Hardy has revealed his desires of new films of the saga.
Better late than never
Despite the fact that “Fury Road” was a total commercial success and a crowd pleaser it might be a while before we see another “Mad Max” installment. Since Warner Bros. is the only one who isn’t so excited about a new one. As they’ve turned more selective into which movies they give the green light and which ones they don’t. Focusing mainly on the more established franchises of the brand. Like the new DC Extended Universe, that will turn into a more regular one, and already signing four more “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” films. Along with a King Kong vs Godzilla movie. Needless to say all of this isn’t cheap.
“Fury Road ” only cost $150 million, and since the studio has turned austere the chances of an upcoming film is unlikely anytime soon. Also because, even though “Fury Road” was beloved, a sequel of it isn’t on the priority list at this point. Adding to it that due to the size of the production it might also take a while before a next movie is ready. But the fact that the scripts are ready gives hopes to all the fans.
