Remembering Shannen’s journey
Shannen diagnosis was revealed in August 2015. The actress made the revelation as she presented a lawsuit against her management firm for neglecting insurance. She had first discovered she had an invasive breast cancer in March and that it had spread during a time she was uninsured.
The actress was suing business management firm of Tanner Mainstain saying it didn’t fulfill their job to ensure timely payment of the medical insurance premiums for the policy she had trough the SAG.
The actress was fired by her management firm and she got uninsured and according to her, she didn’t realize. She enrolled once again in the SAG insurance in 2015 and that’s when she got her diagnosis.
From then, she started her journey to fight her breast cancer. She said in an interview in 2015, “I had breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, and from one of my surgeries we discovered that some of the cancer cells might have actually gone out of the lymph nodes. So for that reason, we are doing chemo, and then after chemo, I’ll do radiation.”
She reflected on the fears of her ongoing journey and said, “The unknown is always the scariest part, is the chemo going to work? Is the radiation going to work? You know, am I going to have to go through this again, or am I going to get secondary cancer? Everything else is manageable. Pain is manageable, you know living without a breast is manageable, it’s the worry of your future and how your future is going to affect the people that you love.”
The actress went under a mastectomy and last August she shaved her hair as the treatment started to affect it.
“After my second treatment, my hair was really matted, like in dreadlocks. And I went to try and brush it out, and it just fell out,” Doherty recalls. “I just remember holding onto huge clumps of my hair in my hands, and just running to my mom crying, like, ‘My hair, my hair, my hair, my hair.'”
So she decided to cut it. Along with friends and family, she turned a heartbreaking moment into an inspiring one. They experienced with different hairstyles until they finally shaved it.
“It was just shedding and it was driving me crazy,” she continues. “It was just clumps, and I was like, ‘Just grab the kitchen scissors.’ And my mom’s like, ‘Wait, wait, wait.’ I’m just, like, ‘Grab it.’ She went and grabbed the kitchen scissors, and put it in a ponytail and she just chopped it off. And it was this cute little bob, but it wasn’t enough, you know, it was falling out.”
In February Shannen finished her chemotherapy treatment and started radiation and she also shared it via Instagram.By sharing with people her personal journey she not only showed people the difficult road but opened a place to discuss breast cancer.
We praise her courage and bravery and celebrate this new step forward.
