South Park is getting a 21st season. By far the show is one of the boldest animated displays there is. Especially due to it’s irreverent, smart, and sometimes gross social critic. The new season is expected to take back on their classic storytelling way, of predominantly one-off episodes. Since creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker tried a different more linear approach for season 19 and 20.
But along with season 21 comes more. As Comedy Central confirmed that the show will be running until 2019 through season 23. The original contract was set to expire at the end of the 20th season, but its creators renewed the contract in 2015.Along with the new episodes, South Park will also have new partners in crime and an earlier release date than expected.
Back to basics
The show will return to its one-episode storytelling way. The last two seasons, even though great, lacked the same intensity as usual. Also, the very deep, and sometimes complicated serial structure made the show feel like it was servicing all the storylines set in motion at the beginning. Still, the creators are not the only ones to blame, as they were flared by Trump and the events happening in the country.
Being all of it so surreal that even South Park was caught off guard. As creator Trey Parker said: “It’s tricky now because satire has sort of become reality – it’s really hard to make fun of! We were really trying to make fun of what was going on in the last season of South Park, but we couldn’t keep up. What was actually happening was much funnier than anything we could come up with. So we decided to kind of back off and let them do their comedy and we’ll do ours“.
Premier date is this year
In recent years, the show usually released their upcoming seasons during September. With season 19 and 20 being released on the second weekend of the month. While season 17 and 18 chose the third weekend. But this time the guys want to get back to TV as soon as they can. They’ll be returning to our screens on Wednesday, Aug. 23rd at 10/9c, until November 15th. Also, they will be pairing up with the premier of Broad City’s season 4.
“South Park remains the bedrock of Comedy Central and we are thrilled that new episodes will continue to entertain audiences for years to come. The series remains as urgent and relevant now as the day it premiered and at nearly 20 seasons in it continues to draw generations of new fans”. Said Michele Ganeless, president of Comedy Central, in a press release.
