Rosie O’Donnell: Her Troubled Relationship With Daughter Chelsea

O’Donell’s 20-year-Old Daughter Is Currently Expecting A Child

Rosie O’Donnell and her estranged daughter, Chelse Alliegro, are having a much public feud. Things reignited after Chelsea announced her pregnancy in Daily Mail interview on Tuesday.

The pair has always had a troubled relationship in the public eye. For Rosie, these are hard times since her ex-wife committed suicide last week.

Chelsea’s relationship became a Twitter public war

Chelsea fired the opening shot by telling DailyMail TV that she’s nine weeks pregnant with husband Nick Alliegro. Chelse went on talking about her pregnancy and how she doesn’t picture her adoptive mother in her child’s life.

“It’s very exciting and I’m looking forward to it. But Rosie will not be in my child’s life — and no, I do not feel sad about that to be honest.”

Rosie adopted Chelsea as a baby with her then-wife Kelli Carpenter-O’Donnell. The two also share son Parker, 22, son Blake, 17, and daughter Vivienne, 14. Rosie is also mother to daughter Dakota, 4, whom she shares with her late ex-wife Michelle Rounds, who died of apparent suicide last week.

Chelsea’s interview caused Rosie to took to Twitter and share some messages to her daughter.

“We have been here before Chelsea. You wanna go a few rounds in public. Seems so,” Rosie tweeted on Sept. 19 before accusing her daughter of trying to cash in on Michelle’s apparent suicide.

“Michelle’s death = money 4 Chelsea,” she added after Chelsea talked to the Daily Mail about her former stepmom’s passing. Rosie also wrote, “What will you do with no tabloids to call. No one to blame but you. You child. You same same same.”

The former ‘View’ co-host also claimed she is unable to get in touch with Chelsea even if she wanted to. She wrote: “I don’t have her # – no contact since … jan … a reporter called her – and then paid her – AGAIN.(sic)”

Earlier this year, Chelsea accused Rosie of being verbally abusive towards her and of threatening to attack her with a wine bottle. Rosie responded by addressing her adopted daughter’s accusations during a speech at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City.

Making reference to Joan Crawford, who had a strained relationship with her adopted daughter Christina, Rosie said: “Things have been rough in my family in the last week. Let’s just say I feel strongly Joan Crawford was framed.”

Troubled relationship between the O’Donell’s

Alliegro and O’Donnell have had a strained relationship for most of Alliegro’s adult life. In 2015, Chelsea ran away from home at age 17, prompting O’Donnell to plead on Twitter for her safe return. O’Donnell said that Alliegro was mentally ill and needed care.

New Jersey police found her a week later at the house of 25-year-old alleged heroin addict Steven Sheerer.  Sheerer’s attorney told at the time that his relationship with Chelsea was consensual and that they began dating on the dating app Tinder, on which she identified herself as 19. At the time, Rosie’s representative Cindi Berger said Chelsea suffers from mental illness and had gone off her medication.

“Chelsea, like millions of people, lives with mental illness,” Berger said. “It has been a difficult road for Chelsea and her family and they just want her back safe. [Rosie and Chelsea] have a good relationship. Rosie loves Chelsea very much.”

However, Chelsea had a different version of the story. She claimed that O’Donnell had actually kicked her out of the house and denied she had any mental illness, saying she was “happier than I’ve been in years.” She also chose to move out of her family’s New York house and into the home of her biological mother, Wisconsin resident Deanna Micoley.

“Chelsea made a decision when she turned 18 that she wanted to go to her birth mother,” Rosie’s representative said at the time. “This was her choice.”

In August 2016, Rosie and Chelsea appeared to have reconciled, and the comedian posted a selfie of the two on Instagram. But then, months later Chelsea met her now-husband Nick, 31, and the pair got married without notifying O’Donnell.

Last March, Chelsea opened up about their marriage in an interview. “[Rosie] was upset that we got married without telling her, which I totally understand,” she said at the time.

“I think she was shocked. The last time we got into an argument, we ended up screaming at each other and I left the room.”

“Growing up, I never really got along with her and then once she kicked me out, I was just kind of done.”

Tough news

Now, with the news that Chelsea is pregnant, O’Donnell is none-too-pleased, especially since the Daily Mail revealed in the interview with Alliegro that O’Donnell’s ex-wife, Michelle Round, committed suicide last week.

“I am saddened to hear about this terrible tragedy,” O’Donnell said in a statement. “Mental illness is a very serious issue affecting many families. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle’s family, her wife and their child.”
