Netflix Is Investing About $8 Billion In Anime By Adding 30 New Series

About 50% Of Their Original Content Will Be Anime

Netflix is investing in 30 new anime series slated for next year. The company announced on Tuesday. The streaming giant also announced an additional $1 billion to the original content budget.

Netflix is no stranger to animes. In recent months, the company has already premiered animes such as the ‘Death Note’ film and the anime series ‘Neo Yokio.’

Almost half of the original content in anime

Netflix plans to increase its original content is no secrecy, however, the company revealed almost half of the original content will be anime.

The company announced earlier this week a $8 billion total budget destined to original content. Sending a clear message to investors, and Hollywood, that they’re really going big on its own entertainment.

According to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, the ultimate goal is to make a library containing 50% of the original content. Specifically, 80 original films all slated for release in 2018.

According to reports, Sarandos also said the company is going forward with 30 anime series also slated for next year.

Last month, the company premiered its very first original anime series, ‘Neo Yokio,’ with Jaden Smith voicing the main character.

Also, Netflix has had success bringing Japanese-only productions stateside in the past with generous licensing deals, with shows like ‘Knights of Sidonia’ and ‘Ajin: Demi-Human’ finding audiences in English-speaking markets.

The company also helmed its live-action adaptation of popular manga ‘Death Note,’ which marked just the beginning of the anime taking on Netflix era.

Anticipated rankings about to reveal

Nielsen, an audience measurement company, is set to offer networks and studios data on who is watching programs on streaming video-on-demand services such as Netflix.

The company has been tracking streaming content since 2014 but announced the new service on Wednesday. It will give for the first time clients online viewership information about their own shows and movies and the programming of their competitors.’

The service comes as handy for networks and studios who have been trying to keep up with the digital scene. This way they could see how other programs are doing. It might come into negotiation deals with streaming services.

Executives that sell their programming to Netflix and streaming services have said the company shares information on how many subscribers watch their shows, but the data has been provided confidentially.

The data will also uncover how many people are watching Netflix originals such as ‘Stranger Things‘ and ‘House of Cards.’

Streaming services have long been pretty secretive about the size of their audiences for specific programs. While TV ratings for broadcast and cable network fare are widely distributed and reported on in the press.
