Find Out Where The Inspiration Behind Princess Leia’s Hair Is

Spoiler: It’s All From Badass Women

It has been a very difficult 2016. As we have had to face some tragedies. And also say goodbye to many of our favorite stars from the industry. Especially in the music and cinema one.

As those iconic persons have passed away there has been millions of tributes to them. Through concerts, events, social media and more. To remember why these persons were admirable to us and how they mark our lives. And obviously pop-culture.

Damsel without stress.

One of the famous persons that we have lost this year, and fairly recently, is Carrie Fisher. Known mainly for playing the role of Princess Leia. The character of Leia not only created tons of crushes back in the day. As well it redefined bikini fashion and the role of a princess.

Badass princess.

As Leia was presented very differently than any other of the “chick from the movie.” As she was not only beautiful but as well smart, brave and mainly badass. As she fought along Luke and Han against the empire. And collaborate greatly on the strategy before the battles.

Unique attitude.

Since Princess Leia was such a unique character and in such a unique movie Lucas wanted her to stand out. And that bagel bun hairstyle was something that really worked. When he was planning her looks he got inspiration from some of the most badass women in history.

Lucas explains.

As he told in an interview in 2002: “In the 1977 film, I was working very hard to create something different that wasn’t fashion, so I went with a kind of Southwestern Pancho Villa woman revolutionary look, which is what that is. The buns are basically from turn-of-the-century Mexico. Then it took such hits and became such a thing. In the new trilogy, the same thing applies, to try and do something timeless. I’m just basically having a good time”

Historic backup.

As University of Texas associate professor Eric Tang backup, uploading a photo on his Facebook account from a Star Wars art exhibition in Denver. Proving Leia’s hairstyle origin. Also, Leia’s hair might be inspired by the “squash blossom” hairstyle worn by the young woman of the American Hopi tribe as a sing of their maidenhood. Who were known for resisting the colonial rule.

Not only the inspiration that George Lucas chose gave Leia that cool and unique look he was after. But as well it gave her even more, attitude, especially now that we know the origin of it. Something that was applied to the most recent movies, as we see Padme.
