Paramount Pictures just released the first trailer for ‘Downsizing’. The film stars Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig as they go modern-day Liliput.
The film has gotten good reviews and is set to release on December 22.
Going Liliput, all the way
Fresh off screenings in Venice, Telluride, and TIFF, Payne’s big-thinking social satire gets a heartfelt and hilarious debut trailer.
The synopsis of the film reads: “When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to over-population, Paul, played by Damon, and his wife Audrey, played by Wiig, decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.”
In the clip, we get to see a glimpse of “Leisureland,” the village where the new little people live. Also, the drama that’s about to develop the characters.
‘Downsizing’ was written and directed by Alexander Payne known for helming movies such as ‘Sideways’, ‘The Descendants’, and ‘Nebraska.’
Along with Kirsten Wiig and Matt Damon in the main roles, the movie also stars Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis, Hong Chau, Neil Patrick Harris, Udo Kier and James Van Der Beek.
‘Downsizing’ is set for release on December 22.
Ingenious comedy of scale
‘Downsizing’ was first debuted at the Venice Film Festival, and continued its way through the festival season with a screening at Telluride Film Festival, and finally the Toronto Film Festival.
The film is a touching tale of a man whose problems grow bigger as he gets smaller and an earnest environmental parable. It all adds up to a film that risks, at times, becoming a little too much. Yet Payne has made that rare thing: a ticklish and resonant crowd-pleaser for grown-ups.
The film has received good reviews as a thinking-small satire of modern day America.
Payne appears to be taking a few swipes at Trump’s America as he portrays the underclass in “Leisureland,” bussed in to tend to the rich folks’ homes but living in a huge shanty town beyond the wall.
Payne’s fine work is completed by an original choice of heroine. It comes as a take of fresh air. Ngoc Lan, played by Hong Chau, is a motor-mouthed, one-legged Vietnamese political protester who was imprisoned and then shrunk by the authorities to get rid of her.
The result should prove to be a major draw at the box office and a leading awards contender.
