Audioslave Members Perform ‘Like A Stone’ To Honor Chris Cornell

The Performance Is Very Touching

The death of Chris Cornell a few weeks ago has left a huge void. Especially for those who meet him. Reason, why his former Audioslave band-mates have played “Like A Stone” in his honor. This isn’t the first tribute that famous musicians have made as a recognition to the late Cornell. Since Eddie Vedder, Corey Taylor, Guns ‘N’ Roses, and others have covered some of his most iconic songs.

But this time the song has a way more powerful feeling since Audioslave had reunited in January this year. They played together for the last time at an Anti-Trump Inauguration on January 20th.

A reunion has been planned

Tom Morello, who played lead guitars on the band, recalls his last interaction with the late singer. “We hung out after the show – just laughed, took pictures. The last thing he said to me was, ‘I had such a great time. I would love to do this again. You just let me know.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s figure it out!’” He also admits he hasn’t accepted Chris Cornell’s death. “I still expect this to be some kind of mistake” he adds. ““It’s unbelievable, I don’t know what the phases of mourning are, but I’m in the first one.”

Morello recalls his last interaction with Cornell. He didn’t seem any different according to the guitar player. They even talked about a reunion. “The last thing he said to me was, ‘I had such a great time. I would love to do this again. You just let me know.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s figure it out!'”

Audioslave: an amazing supergroup

Audioslave started in 2001, with the formation of an amazing group of rockstars. Chris Cornell, former Soundgarden member was the lead singer, and Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. The band had amazing success, they got nominations for “Best Rock Album” in 2005 and “Like a Stone” was nominated for “Best Hard Rock Performance”.

They released 3 albums is their musical careers and 11 singles. They had a very wide audience and played together until 2007 when unfortunately Cornell parted ways after the releasing this statement: “Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors.”

After the ending

Even though they split in 2007, Cornell and Morello shared a stage at the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2015 Cornell even said he was eager of an Audioslave reunion opening many possibilities for fans to see their band together once more.

“Like a Stone” has been one of the most successful songs the band has ever released. It was their biggest US hit and even got a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Cornell usually wrote the composition of most Audioslave’s song. According to the bassist of the band, the theme is about an old man waiting for death. But according to Cornell’s own words “It’s a song about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: You work really hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway.”

Fans lead to believe that the song was originally about Layne Stanley, Alice in Chains singer, who sadly passed away in 2002. Cornell denied the rumors and added that he’s not one of those guys where something happens and then goes running around writing about it. He also clarified that he wrote the song before Stanley’s death.

The song also became the fifth best performing alternative song on the Alternative Songs chart of the decade.
