Sparking the fire.

On Friday, Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, claimed to Women’s Wear Daily,  that Meryl Streep had dropped the fashion house and went for another house’s design that offered to pay her.

According to the German designer, the actress had previously decided to wear Chanel and just a few days later someone from Meryl’s team called and said, “‘Don’t continue the dress. We found someone who will pay us.”

Not stopping there, the designer continued, “After we gift her a dress that’s 100,000 euros, we found later we had to pay. ‘We give them dresses, we make the dresses, but we don’t pay.”

A member of Meryl’s team then stated to The Hollywood Reporter that the designer’s accusation was false and it was even against the actress ethic get paid after wearing a dress.

Not good enough for an apology.

Later Lagerfeld admitted he was wrong though a statement on Saturday that said, “Chanel engaged in conversations with Ms. Streep’s stylist, on her request, to design a dress for her to wear to the Academy Awards. After an informal conversation, I misunderstood that Ms. Streep may have chosen another designer due to remuneration, which Ms. Streep’s team has confirmed is not the case.”

He added, “I regret this controversy and wish Ms. Streep well with her 20th Academy Award nomination.” But the actress is not having it.

She released her very own statement on Saturday accusing the publication and the designer of defamation, “In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication”

Eclipsing her special moment.

The Hollywood icon is pretty upset and shocked over the ugly situation, not only she hurts being defamed by the publication and the renown designer, but highlights the fact that happened during a special moment for her, her 20th nomination which comes for her performance as Florence Foster Jenkins.

Meryl stated, “The story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record-breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues, and the audience.”
