It was a really memorable season finale for ‘Saturday Night Live’ on May 20. Longtime cast members Bobby Moynihan and Vanessa Bayer said goodbye to the show, as well as Alec Baldwin’s Trump impersonation, while Dwayne Johnson joined the Five-Timers Club… And announced his presidential bid alongside Tom Hanks. Yes, you read it correctly.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joined the Five-Timers Club as host of the season finale of season 42 of ‘SNL.’ Welcomed by Alec Baldwin, The Rock got his own smoking jacket, but he didn’t just leave it there.
The ‘Baywatch’ star took the opportunity to bring out a very commented subject: running for president in 2020. The actor has often teased his desire to run for the charge and made it “official” in the sketch comedy show. “A lot of people have been telling me that I should run for President,” he said. “And I gotta tell you, it’s very flattering but tonight, I wanna put this for rest and just say once and for all – I’m in.”
“Starting tonight, I am running for the President of the United States,” he added, before unveiling his amazing running partner: “He’s charming, universally adored by almost every human alive… Mr. Tom Hanks!”
“The truth is, America needs us,” joked Hanks. “No one can seem to agree on anything anymore, except for two things.”
“Pizza,” interrupted Johnson, “and us!”
Hanks narrated his irrefutable statistic calculations on how, together, they would get 100% of the vote. He would get the senior vote, as he fought in WWII “in like 10 different movies,” while Johnson said he’d get the minority vote because “everyone just assumes that I’m whatever they are.”
We still don’t know whether Dwayne Johnson is being serious or not
After some laughs, Johnson put a more serious tone to clarify that he and Tom were only joking. “When it comes to politics, we need more poise and less noise,” he said. “Americans deserve strong, capable leaders. Leaders who care about this country and care about its people.”
“Dwayne,” Hanks replied. “That kind of sounds like you and me… I guess we’ve got to do it!” Next, a massive “Johnson-Hanks 2020” banner unfurled on the back, and a rain, white and blue confetti dropped from the roof.
I don’t even know what to believe anymore. I mean, Donald Trump is president. Let that sink in for a while. The ex-’Apprentice’ host managed to reach the office. What could stop The Rock from doing so?
In an interview with GQ earlier this month, the ‘Fast and Furious’ star addressed the idea of a presidential run. “I think that it’s a real possibility,” he said. “A year ago, it started coming up more and more. There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think ‘Let me really rethink my answer and make sure I am giving an answer that is truthful and also respectful.’”
Just for the record, a recent national poll said Johnson would beat President Trump 42-37 percent. I guess we’ll just have to wait for 2020.
That just reminded me of something.
