The recent death of Chris Cornell took the world by surprise and generated a lot of grief. To what many peers and colleagues took social media to express the sadness of his loss. One of the many heavyweight artists who grief Cornell is Tom Morello. Morello was Cornell’s bandmate when they formed the supergroup Audioslave. He decided to write a heartfelt poem about his late friend, which is very touching.
Since this Thursday the former Soundgarden, Temple of Dogs and Audioslave lead singer took his own life in his hotel room, after a Soundgarden’s show in Detroit. Even though that Cornell’s death was a suicide by hanging, the full autopsy has yet to be revealed. Since it’s wife, Vicky, said that she feared for him the day he died as he took a larger dose of Ativan, a tranquilizer, and anti-anxiety medication. That if used in a higher dosage it can cause paranoid or suicidal thoughts. Morello took Instagram after founding out about Cornell’s death. “Thank you for your friendship and your humor and your intellect and your singular and unmatched talent”.
The emotional poem
Morello posted an image of Audioslave on his Instagram along with the lines that he wrote in honor of his late friend. The poem’s lines embodied the charisma, spirit, integrity, influence and character of Cornell. Obviously with the artistry of Morello and with a more personal and intimate feeling, due to the close relationship of both musicians. The poem reads:
“You’re a prince, you’re a snare, you’re a shadow
You’re twilight and star burn and shade
You’re a sage, you’re a wound shared, you’re masked
You’re a pillar of smoke, you’re a platinum heart
You’re a brush fire, you’re caged, you’re free
Your vision pierces, you do not see
You are pieces strewn on the hillside
You’re open armed, you’re armed, you’re true
You’re a revealer of visions, you’re the passenger, you’re a never fading scar
You’re twilight and star burn and shade
You’re the secret veiled, you’re the secret revealed, you’re surrounded no more
You’re not there, now you’re always here
You’re a handsome groom, a loving father, a haunted stairwell
You’re the clear bell ringing, the mountains echo your song
Maybe no one has ever known you
You are twilight and star burn and shade”
