Tegan And Sara Announce Their New LGTBQ Foundation

These Girls Are Going Big!

Great news coming up!

On Monday, the Canadian duo announced the greatest news ever! They launched their LGTBQ foundation for girls and women via a letter on their website. Tegan and Sara’s goal is to make voices heard, fight oppression and fight for the representation of those who feel left behind.

The sisters consider the foundation, the best way to be proactive and participate actively in the fight against oppression. The Tegan and Sara Foundation aims to “fight for economic justice, health and representation for the LGBTQ community, girls and women.”

Such a good cause!

Fighting sexism and homophobia.

The openly lesbian and Canadian twins have fought homophobia and sexism in the music industry for a long time. Now they’re using their voices to fight it in society as well, in a much more direct way, via a foundation to bring awareness and fight for equality.

The Tegan And Sara Foundation.

On Monday, the girls made the announcement trough their website. They also share the huge news on both Instagram and Twitter. Through a touching and brave letter, the girls explained what moved them to make the decision.

We have been working on a new project – the @teganandsarafoundation. Our mission: to fight for economic justice, health, and representation for LGBTQ girls and women. Over the years, our LGBTQ fans have supported us in innumerable ways. Your personal histories of injustice and discrimination at home, school, work, and church have always inspired us to use our public status to speak out about the struggles impacting the LGBTQ community. We started the Foundation to dismantle the systems of inequity that prevent LGBTQ girls and women from reaching their full potential. Together, we can make a difference. Pieces coming together.

During the Fall tour of their album “Love You To Death,” the girls spend a lot of time reading letters from their fans and actually meeting with them. They also met with activists, legislators and people related to LGBTQ causes.

Listening and learning tour.

The experience was really rewarding for the twins. The meetings gave them the opportunity to get actively involved with the LGBTQ society which has supported them from day one. They now call their tour the “listening and learning tour.”

From inspiration to action.

Finding a beautiful inspiration in the activists’ work they met during the fall tour, the girls decided to take action. Most of all, their fans’ testimonies of discrimination were a true wake-up call. “Most importantly, we learned that LGBTQ women and girls are feeling overwhelmingly rejected and left behind,” Tegan and Sara said.

Affected women.

Through stories, the girls noticed how the lack of federal funding for LGBTQ services affects people. They also realized that the most affected women are women of color, lesbian, and trans communities who suffer discrimination in a deeper way.

Political situation.

An extra push was Trump’s victory in the elections, as the girls stated in the letter “Today, given the state of politics in the United States, we must continue to unite and fight for our rights and against all forms of oppression.”

¡Voilà!

That’s how this beautiful project came together, with inspiration by others, teamwork, and a great desire to make the difference. The girls plan to fight inequity as well as helping other activists by raising funds and awareness for their initiatives.

They already have their first initiative going on!

The girls are taking the things pretty seriously, and have teamed up with Kiehl’s Canada to raise fundings.

Way to go girls!
