It’s been quite a week for Kim Kardashian, from being a keynote speaker at the annual Forbes Women’s Summit to facing a blackface controversy.
The reality star wrapped up the week in a celebration as her daughter, North West, turned four on Thursday.
Keynote speaker at Forbes annual Women’s Summit
Forbes announced last March its annual Forbes Women’s Summit, which took place on Tuesday.
Forbes also announced that Kim Kardashian was set to be one of the keynote speakers at the event, which theme was Navigating a New Tomorrow.
The reality star took to New York on Tuesday to speak about the use of social media to master the exposure of brands.
If someone masters this field, it’s Kim who has a combined 180 million followers on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.Also, she came in at number 47 with $45.5 million on the 2017 Forbes list.
During the event, Her wide-ranging conversations touched on how hurtful comments affect her, her still-growing brand, and how the robbery in Paris has changed her life.
Kim said she’s aware of her detractors, but said she has a bigger message of positivity to share.
“So if people, or young girls, or kids can look up to just someone that works really hard, and focuses on really what I want, and makes that happen, then you know I hope that inspires them.”
The reality star also said that clearly mean comments and Internet trolls affect her, however, she’s more concerned that people are victims of the same bullying actions.
“They have this keyboard courage that no one will see them and they will just write whatever and hurt your feelings.”
Blackface Controversy
On Wednesday, the reality star turned businesswoman shared a snap revealing the launch of her first line of cosmetics.
The Kim Kardashian West cosmetics line includes a contour and highlight kit which Kim promoted on a photo. While some fans were over the edge about the new products, other pointed out her skin looked darker than usual in the photo.
Kim was accused of blackfacing in the photo. Blackface is considered a racist practice, which appropriates black culture and uses it for entertainment or profit.
Twitter was flooded with people pointing out that the photo used to promote the product has both a darker tone and a lighter tone version. They also pointed out that the reality star is using both versions at the same time which raises questions about the purpose of doing this.
While Kim’s Twitter avatar features the lighter picture, for example, and that is also the only one being used on her beauty line’s Instagram account. Her personal Instagram, meanwhile, features the darker image.
People were definitely not having it. Even when they were aware that her skin looks different under certain lights, the suspicious of this being a marketing trick remains.
Also, what really isn’t helping Kim’s case is her long history of appropriating and mimicking parts of black culture. She’s been called out for wearing cornrows multiple times, and for mimicking a black woman on the cover of Paper magazine.
It’s not the first time the powerful clan is in a controversy like this regarding products. Last week, Klhoé and Kylie were both accused separately of copying indie designers.
Newly crowned four-year-old princess
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter North West celebrated her fourth birthday in an unexpected casual way.
The celebration started at home as Kim Snapchatted the house decoration. Which included a balloon arch that read Happy Birthday North and two giant bundles of mermaid inspired balloons.
The clan then took to Ruby’s Diner in California where they gathered to celebrate the little girl. Kim, Kanye, little brother Saint West, grandma Kris Jenner and aunts Kourtney Kardashian and Kylie Jenner were all there to partake in the laid-back fun.
The famous clan made sure to Snapchat the whole thing, including the birthday gifts to North. Mom and dad gifted the birthday girl two Pomeranians. It was Auntie Kourtney who snapped a photo of the pups for social media.
Other family members took to social media to gush over the birthday girl. “Happy Birthday to our beautiful, funny, smart little love bug, North,” Kris wrote. “You bring so much light to our lives and I am blessed beyond words to have you as my granddaughter.”
Kylie kept it simple and posted an adorable photo of North captioned “Happy birthday to this cutie.”
While proud mom, Kim, shared a heartwarming montage of the mother-daughter pair to her website.
This is the most low-key birthday party North’s had. Last year, North and her cousin Penelope Disick celebrated their birthdays with a joint mermaid themed party.
On her second birthday, the happy parents took her to a Disneyland excursion and we saw her having fun and living it up.
