George Prior is a 50 years old American that decided to put aside his healthy life during a month. He decided to make an experiment during this month to highlight the dangerous effects of sugar. This experiment consists of drinking nothing but Coke during a month. The 50 years old man made a documentary during the process, to record every second of his change. He wanted to show that drinking Coke is not as healthy as the people believe.
Prior tries to show people that the challenge in not related only with coke. If it’s true that the main element is the soda, he tries to show that in a “healthy” daily routine, drinks like a Starbucks’s coffee or orange juice can also be very dangerous to your body. So, basically what Prior tries to do is alerting to those persons that believed that what they drink or eat doesn’t have any effects on their bodies. In this challenge intervened some specialist that explain some functions of the body so that the public realizes that consume so much sugar is very dangerous to everyone.
At the end of this project, the consequences that Prior noticed on his body were very shocking. He could not wear anymore his clothes. Before experiment begins, he never needed Coke. But during the process, his body began to have the need to obtain more sugar. This is a raw but good way to create awareness about our body and how the way we nourish ourselves is directly related to how it functions.
10 cans of Cokes a day are way too much!
Prior says that drinking ten cans of Coke a day is too much. And even when some people know that they shouldn’t drink that amount of soda, they justified themselves by saying that they only drink four cokes, and not ten.
It’s not just Coke, is much more than that.
By drinking two glasses of orange juice, two coffee drinks, two “healthy” brand ice teas and a smoothie, is like drinking ten cans of coke.
Prior believes Americans drink the sugar equivalent of ten cokes.
Before starting the challenge, George had to go to the doctor and undergo a physical test to make sure that he had the capability to start the challenge. And so, it began.
The more you drink, the more you crave.
Prior started noticing that while he drank more Coke, he craved more of it, and sugar in general. The World Health Organization recommends that the level of sugar that people should intake is that at least 25 grams of sugar per day.
Ingesting a lot of sugar can be awful for your body.
The expert on childhood obesity, Dr. Robert Lustig, says that the sugar has more direct consequences than it’s calories. It’s all related to the way we process sugar.
The body can’t process the consuming of too much sugar.
When you ingest a lot of sugar, your liver doesn’t have the capacity to process all the fructose, so is turned into liver fat. This can cause at long term metabolic diseases.
Americans consume an average of 22.2 teaspoons of sugar every day.
Consuming too much sugar has many consequences, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, kidney disease, among others.
Prior gained a pound day at the beginning of the challenge.
During this experiment, the 50 years-old man had to consume more calories and sugar. His challenge meant he consumed an extra 1,400 calories and 390 grams of sugar a day.
The consequences of the experiment.
At the end of the challenge, Prior feels heavier and he couldn’t wear his clothes. He stated: “I feel heavier, I can’t wear my long pants to work anymore. My clothes all fit tightly and I can’t bend over easily.”
Definitely he didn’t love Coke.
Prior didn’t fall in love with soda, so he won´t drink it in the near future. He said that he won’t drink Coke in following years. He decided to go back to his healthy diet, that doesn’t involve process food and it’s focus on food that actually provides nutrients.
23 pounds, that’s how much he gained!
During this experiment he went from 168 to 192 pounds and his body fat increased 7 per cent, he went from 9 to 16 percent. Proving that Coke digest effectively has consequences over the body.
