A cover boy for CoverGirl. James Charles, also known as CoverBoy is a YouTube star with more than 650,000 Instagram followers and 75,000 Twitter followers. James is a makeup expert and in his videos he shows makeup techniques to both boys and girls. The 17-year-old high school student is openly gay.
So, for the first time in 55 years the “easy, breezy” makeup company decided to use a boy as the spokesmodel. Yes, quite a shift! The announce was made by Katy Perry over Instagram last week, where she proudly welcome James to the CoverGirl family.
This decision follows a commercial movement from the company, in order attract millenials and welcome the LGBTQ community to the brand.
The announcement is also a reflection of the huge cultural and religious shift in our society. For the past years pro-LGBT movements have been everywhere, and luckily this issue is less of a taboo. Let’s hope that in the near future, we’re open to recognise and accept every person for what they actually are, human beings.
