A Parsons Student Designed Her Senior Thesis To Help Syrian Refugees

Angela Luna has designed her senior thesis collection to address the problems facing Syrian refugees as they make their journey across borders to safety. She is a 22-year-old student at Parsons Fashion Design. She lives in Massachusetts.

Luna has been announced as a finalist for the Parsons School of Fashion 2016 Designer of the Year, which is amazing. “My goal was to have an approach to thesis that wasn’t just inspired by a generic thing. [My goal] was definitely to have a problem that would take me all year to solve,” she said.

Luna was an eveningwear designer focusing on hand stitching, beading, and couture techniques. She had a job lined up and a contract signed with Abercrombie & Fitch to start straight after graduation, but after this amazing experience, she decided she would start a design intervention to help the best way she can with the solution.

Luna was inspired to help Syrian refugees after watching a video of their perilous journey across the Aegean Sea to Europe.

Her thesis collection consists of seven transformative outerwear looks that are both unisex and one size fits all.

Her refugee crisis thesis project is only part of her larger brand, “Design for Difference.” Luna has created a promotional video hoping it would help spread the word, watch the video below!
