Selena Gomez made a huge come back to the spotlight when she appeared on Sunday night at the American Music Awards. The star gave an emotional speech that touched every single heart in the crowd.
The 24-year-old singer/actress showed up to the stage to receive the award for Favorite Female Pop/Rock artist, making her first public appearance since she announced in August a “time off” from her career. Gomez checked into a treatment facility to focus on her mental health as she is dealing with depression and anxiety.
Selena revealed she felt “broken inside”.
The “Hands to Myself” singer talked about her experience around social media and shared a positive message to those that are feeling down.
She started her speech claiming everybody knows a lot about her life.
“I think it’s safe to say most of you know my life whether I liked it or not, and I had to stop, because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside, and I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”
Gomez continued talking about the impact of social media.
“I don’t wanna see your bodies on Instagram, I wanna see what’s in your heart” she added, “I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore”.
The speech moved the entire audience, including celebrity friends.
Lady Gaga was almost in tears, the singer later shared a photo of the two of them hugging. Ariana Grande was also moved and even Nial Horan gave her a few words of support backstage.
Holding her crying Selena thanked her fans.
“I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love and I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so loyal that I don’t know what I deed to deserve you” To end the speech, Gomez said “I care about people and thank you so much for this, this is for you”
Thank you for your beautiful words.
