Turns Out Lawrence Is Not So Approachable

Jennifer Lawrence sat down to talk with fellow Adam Sandler for Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series, and during the conversation, the two began talking about meeting fans in real life.

“Once I enter a public place I become incredibly rude, I turn into a huge a–,” she said. “That’s kind of like my only way of defending myself.”

Lawrence showed Sandler the icy glare and finger wag she gives people when she sees someone approach her table at a restaurant. As for even considering on asking her a selfie, you may think it twice. Lawrence added that when people request selfies she is quick to shoot them down with a vehement “No!” “That’s like my only defense,” Lawrence said.

The actress also added that she often replies with things like “it’s my day off” if she gets approached while walking down the street.

Finally, she noted that things become even more difficult when she meets up with her close friend, comedian Amy Schumer. “One of my best friends is Amy Schumer. I take my dog to the park all the time, Central Park. As soon as I meet her in the park, we’re f—–.”

Oh, ‘mother!’

In the same interview conducted by Adam Sandler, Lawrence reflected on how the negative reception to ‘mother!’ which was directed by her former boyfriend Darren Aronofsky affected the relationship.

“Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to go see it, and then it’s just out of your hands,” she said. “I normally just kind of let it go, ” she started. “Dating the director was different. We’d be on the [press] tour together, I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.”

“He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about and I get it. It’s his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it, ” she explained. “I was doing double duty trying to be a supportive partner, while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about mother! for one second?’”

Lawrence said the film started to take a greater toll on the couple when Aronofsky would read out negative reviews to her. “I finally was just like, ‘It’s not healthy. Neither of us are doing it because if I read it, I start getting defensive.’ Especially because it’s my man,” she continued.

“It’s awesome, what we did — some people hate it and the people who hate it, really hate it. But it’s nothing that needs to be defended and if I read a negative review, I just feel defensive.”

The couple met in 2016, when Aronofsky directed Lawrence in ‘mother!’  The film, despite generally positive reviews from critics, was detested by many. Its box office receipts amounted to a worldwide total of only $44.4 million, against a $30 million production budget. And as for the audience reaction, the film got the infamous F in CinemaScore.

Despite the reception and reviews, Lawrence previously said she wasn’t surprised by the divisive audience reaction. “There is no middle ground,” she said.

“We knew that it was divided. That’s what [was] so exciting — everybody is going to feel something. It’s going to create a conversation. It’s going to create a controversy. Nobody is going to leave not getting something from it.”
