Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s divorce is finally happening. After an almost two-year separation, the couple filed for divorce on Thursday, in what seems a friendly arrangement.
The couple first announced their separation in 2015 the day following their 10th anniversary. This way they put an end to rumors of reconciliation.
Divorce finally filed
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s divorce is a real thing now. The actors filed divorce petitions together in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday. The filing was made without attorneys and in a coordinated way. The pair is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their children.
The date of separation and the division of property and any spousal support is still to be determined, but it’s expected to be withing the next six months.
The couple surprised fans almost two years ago when they announced they were splitting the day after their 10th wedding anniversary in June 2015.
At the time they published a joint statement, “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.”
Since then they were often seen happily together with their children, which made fans think of a reconciliation. But seems like they were just honoring their word of keeping it friendly and trying their best at co-parenting.
Lovestory
Affleck and Garner first met in 2001, on the set of the movie Pearl Harbor. However, the flame didn’t light until they were on the set of Daredevil in 2002.
At the time Garner was married to Scott Foley and Affleck engaged to Jennifer Lopez. So they had to wait to start their love affair and they didn’t start dating until seven months after Ben ended his engagement to Lopez.
They began dating in 2004 and married in June 2005 in a private Turks and Caicos ceremony. They welcomed their first daughter Violet Anne in December of that same year.Their second daughter Seraphina Rose Elizabeth arrived in January 2009 and son Samuel in February 2012.
Even when for fans the announcement of the separation was a surprise, the couple had a rocky relationship over the years. This was confirmed once they split and a rumor of Ben cheating with the nanny Christine Ouzounian began.
Garner said about it ‘We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation.”
Mastering the friendly divorce
Despite the rumors of cheating and all the frenzy around their high-profile relationship Ben and Jennifer honored their word and really keep it friendly.Unlike other famous couples that call it quits they remained friends while co-parenting their three kids. They are truly showing us how friendly divorce is done.
Recently, Affleck announced he had just finished his treatment for alcohol addiction. At the time he thanked Garner for her incredible support. Since their separation announcement, they continued to live together and have been seen together and even vacationing together.
Affleck assured: “I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do.”
They are not shy when talking about their admiration for each other. Affleck recently said on Ellen about Garner, “We’re good friends and we’re doing our best. And the kids are fabulous and we’re working on our best for them.”
Garner feels the same towards Affleck. She has called him the “most brilliant person in any room” and “the love of [her] life.” “I didn’t marry the big fat movie star; I married him,” she said at the time. “And I would go back and remake that decision. I ran down the beach to him, and I would again.”
Ben and Jennifer have clearly out their children first and have taken the time to handle their divorce as they think is the best.
