Ed Sheeran Opens Up About His Substance Abuse Struggle

He Thanked His Girlfriend Cherry Seaborn For Helping Him All The Way Through

Ed Sheeran revealed he battle with substance abuse during ‘The Jonathan Ross Show,’ on Saturday. The singer opened up about the struggle and credited girlfriend Cherry Seaborn for helping him kick the bad habit.

Sheeran recently canceled the remaining dates of his tour following a biking accident. The singer suffered several fractures to his arm and was forced to cancel the shows.

Substance abuse

Ed Sheeran appeared on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show‘ on Saturday and revealed his secret struggle with substance abuse.

“I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to [fame], and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on the tour,” he started.

“And all the pitfalls that people read,  I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.”

“I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off.”

Sheeran went on a musical and public hiatus before dropping his album ‘Divide’ earlier this year. He explained how focusing on work helped him to leave the drinking aside.

“I’ve worked my whole life to get to where I am, and you can’t lose that over something that you do in your spare time.”

He also explained that it took some time for him to realize he had a problem.

“It’s all fun to begin with. It all starts off as a party, and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and [I took] a year off.”

According to Sheeran, his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn helped him kick the bad habit.

“We live together now, and I think that was a real help grounding me, I was a 25-year-old in the music industry on tour, so I just needed someone to balance me out.”

Broken arm and canceled tours

Ed Sheeran took fans by surprise when he posted several pictures on Instagram of his injured arm after a biking accident.

Recently the singer revealed that the injuries are actually pretty important since doctors told him he might never play again.

“I tried to say I’ll carry on doing the shows but they said if I put any more stress on it, I might not be able to play [guitar] again so it’s good to be sensible,” he said.

Which is why he was forced to cancel the remaining shows, which marks the first time he cancels shows.

“I do a one-man show so not having my arms is half of the show, so I’ve had to postpone a couple of shows which sucks. It’s actually the first time I’ve ever canceled shows.”

Ed still has the Asian leg of his tour to complete. It includes the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, the UAE and New Zealand. Once he completes the Asia Pacific, he’ll loop back to the UK and Europe for more performances until August 2018.
