Following the success of Frank Ocean’s first album in 2012, channel ORANGE, fans have been anxiously expecting for signs from any new production from the rapper, after confirming in February of 2013 that he was working on the second set of recordings. The only original song he has shown since then was “Hero”, which he uploaded to Soundcloud for free, and then later on November of 2015, the song “Memrise”.

After a three-year wait, he announced on his website his second studio album, Boys Don’t Cry, on a video hosted by Apple Music. The live-stream was filled with background noises and showed a room with some workbenches. After this series of hints, Ocean posted a picture that contained the possible release dates of his new record.

“I wanted it to be an expansion; sonically I wanted to be the next, whatever the next tier for me is, be that. Just open up, challenging song structures, challenging a lot of the things I made on the last project” Said Frank Ocean, referring to the approach that Boys Don’t Cry is taking.

Since his announcement in 2013, more advances of his new album were unveiled as many encounters with famous artist were covered by the press. Some of the people working on his production team include Pharrell Williams, Danger Mouse and Tyler, The Creator.

On January of the same year, before the statements about his new work on the way, the rapper was found having a fight with Chris Brown outside the studio. After the latter had punched Ocean in the face, he was found guilty of “battery.” Fans have been speculating about them working together after the incident, but nothing was proven.

He’s also had a few runs with legal procedures regarding copyrighted material. After the release of his mixtape nostalgia ULTRA, the rock band The Eagles threatened Ocean to sue him for his rendition of the song “Hotel California.” The group’s legal representative claimed he didn’t use a sample, but the whole master track. The fast food chain network, Chipotle Mexican Grill also had an encounter with the rapper in 2014. The company sued him after Ocean backed out of a contract, on which he had to sing a song for a commercial.
