Shonda Rhimes and the cast of Grey’s Anatomy are supporting NFL players’ protest. They are trying to show the racial injustice in the wake of the backlash from President Donald Trump. #TakeAKnee trended and now a few celebs are also visibly showing their support.
It was a full weekend of the NFL responding to President Trump’s comments regarding firing players like Colin Kaepernick. The player chooses to kneel during the National Anthem to draw attention to racial injustice.
Grey’s Anatomy cast takes the knee
On Tuesday, “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes joined some stars of the show and Debbie Allen. They have both acted on and directed episodes of the ABC drama. All decided to kneel “in solidarity of racial justice” while also celebrating their 300th episode.
In a caption to a photo posted on Instagram Tuesday, Rhimes wrote, “and we took a knee in solidarity of racial justice. #takeaknee #greysanatomy #300th.”
The photo showed Rhimes kneeling with her hand over her heart besides ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ stars Ellen Pompeo and Jesse Williams.
On Saturday, Rhimes tweeted: “I think: By kneeling, players don’t disrespect the flag. They ask the US to respect the flag. They ask us to make the anthem true for all of us.”
‘Grey’s’ star Ellen Pompeo is in the photo and, like Rhimes shared it on Instagram.
“We kneel because we are supposed to be one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all #ilovethesepeople #300thepisode,” Pompeo wrote.
The ABC drama, one of the longest-running scripted shows in broadcast history, will mark its 300th episode this season.
Showing support and respect
Numerous stars and activists have posted pictures of themselves kneeling on social media with the hashtag #takeaknee in recent days following President Donald Trump’s remarks last week criticizing NFL players for kneeling during the National Anthem as a form of protest against inequality and police brutality.
The move sparked massive protests and gestures of solidarity at NFL games Sunday and Monday. Hundreds of players kneeled, hundreds more standing with arms locked, and several teams staying in their locker rooms during the performance of the National Anthem.
Singer John Legend also shared an image of him taking a knee while on stage performing.
Over the weekend, singers Pharrell Williams and Eddie Vedder did the same while participating in the Concert for Charlottesville and The Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival respectively.
Stevie Wonder took to both knees while appearing at the Global Citizen Festival
Also on Monday, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny took a knee on the set of the upcoming reboot of ‘The X-Files’.
