David Archuleta Reveals LGBTQ+ Orientation; Urges His Church to Understand

Musician and American Idol alumnus, David Archuleta, has revealed that he has bisexual and asexual orientations; and he asked his Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) better known as the Mormons to understand him. In a lengthy Instagram post, Archuleta said he had been struggling for many years to come to terms with his sexuality, but thought it’s better to publicly reveal his status to help others in his position, TMZ writes.

“I like to keep to myself but also thought this was important to share because I know so many other people from religious upbringings feel the same way,” Archuleta wrote. “I’ve been open to myself and my close family for some years now that I am not sure about my own sexuality. I came out in 2014 as gay to my family. But then I had similar feelings for both genders so maybe a spectrum of bisexual.”

The American Idol’s famous runner-up went on to say that it is okay that he doesn’t experience many sexual desires given that he wanted to remain pure until marriage. He urged the community and the LDS among other Christian churches to show understanding toward LGBTQIA+ since many of them are still trying to really understand their sexuality.

“I think we can do better as people of faith and Christians, including Latter-day Saints, to listen more to the wrestle between being LGBTQIA+ and a person of faith,” he wrote. “I don’t think it should come down to feel you have to accept one or the other. You can be part of the LGBTQIA+ community and still believe in God and His gospel plan.”

The singer went on to say that for almost 20 years, he tried in vain to change himself until he agreed that his creator made him who he is for a purpose. “I’ve tried for almost 20 years to try and change myself until I realized God made me how I am for a purpose,” he said. “And instead of hating what I have considered wrong, I need to see why God loved me for who I am.”

Archuleta went on a missionary journey to Chile for two years and said he wants to be a Mormon within the entertainment industry. His latest album, Therapy Sessions, was released in May 2020.
