Bruno Mars opened up about his late mom in the new number of Latina Magazine. In a candid interview, the artist discussed how she influenced his life and how this has changed since she passed away in 2013.
In the touching interview, the 31-year-old singer also talked about his musical influences and his mixed ethnicity. The upcoming February issue is set for its release on February 14.
Beloved mother of six.
Bernadette Hernandez a Philippine woman, married Pedro Hernandez, a Puerto Rican Jewish descent. The couple moved to Hawaii where they raised their six children Eric, Bruno, Presley, Tahiti, Tiara and Jamie.
After being treated for a heart attack Bernadette died of a brain aneurysm in June 2013 in Hawaii. The siblings were really close to their beloved mother, and so was Bruno who got her name tattooed on the shoulder after the sudden death.
Change of perspective.
The singer has paid tribute to her mom many times. Not only in songs, but also in performances like his 2014’s Super Bowl Halftime Show where he opened the show with a drum set that had Bernadette’s name written across a large red heart.
Nevertheless, Bruno had never opened up about it in interviews before. This time in this interview, the Grammy winner admitted that since his mother passed away his life has changed. He has a new life perspective and lives in a different way. He reflected about how dealing with a loss affects your life, ” It shows you the real importance of life. Nothing else matters in this world but family and your loved ones.”
More than his music.
Despite losing his mother in a physical way, the Hawaii bred singer admitted that she’s with him everywhere he goes. Bruno stated that Bernadette taught him to love and what a woman is supposed to be.
The singer reflected on his mother absence in his life as well as how much she means to him. He said, “She’s more than my music. If I could trade music to have her back, I would. I always hear her say, ‘Keep going and keep doing it.’”

The singer also talked about his mixed ethnicity. Bruno, whose birth name is Peter, is half Puerto Rican and half Philippine. He was raised in Hawaii and was nicknamed Bruno by his father. He made a huge musical impact on the singer. Bruno’s father is an old-school musician. Mars said that all his style came from watching his father, he added, “So that’s where the pinky rings come from, the patent-leather shoes, the suits, and the pompadour.”
Finally, Bruno discussed the influence of black music on his career. He pointed out how black music makes includes a bigger legacy, including every music genre. “When you say ‘black music,’ understand that you are talking about rock, jazz, R&B, reggae, funk, doo-wop, hip-hop, and Motown. Black people created it all.”
