On Tuesday, Showtime Networks announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will play the leading role of the new mini-series based on the classic Eduard. St. Aubyn novels. Cumberbatch will play the role of Patrick Melrose, in the five-time episode series, which for the actor is a dream come true. Can you imagine Cumberbatch playing a funny aristocratic playboy?
Once more, a literary role.
Showtime and Sky Atlantic ordered a miniseries based on Edward St. Aubyn’s novels. Cumberbatch will play the main character, Patrick Melrose “an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy.”
The story follows Melrose’s journey dealing with painful childhood memories of his abusive father and a mother who condoned the behavior. For the actor is a dream come true, back in 2013 in a Reddit Q&A he was asked what literary character he would play and he said it would be Patrick Melrose.
Cumberbatch adds one more literary title to his productions with the mini-series. The actor who gained popularity for his role in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock which nabbed him an Emmy, recently he signed to play a role in the movie The Child in Time, based on Ian McEwan’s novel.

The semi-autobiographical acclaimed novel series follow Patrick Melrose, who makes a “harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood through adult substance abuse and, ultimately, toward recovery.” The Partick Melrose series of novels which consists of Never Mind, Bad News, Some Hope, Mother’s Milk and At Last Mother’s Milk.
The series will have five episodes, each one will cover one novel and focus on a few intense days of Partick’s life. The project will cover a time span from 160s till the early 2000s and will be set in the South of France, New York, and London.
Jumping into production.
Cumberbatch is not only casting but also producing the series. The actor serves as executive producer along with Adam Ackland, his production partner in their company SunnyMarch.
The screenplay is being adapted by One Day’s author, David Nicholls. The writer said, “I’ve been a huge admirer of Edward St Aubyn’s novels for years, and can’t wait to bring these dark, witty, brilliant books to the screen. Benedict is the perfect Patrick Melrose.”
Cumberbatch and Adam Ackland are pretty excited themselves, the partners said “We are delighted to be part of this incredible series. “We have been huge fans of these books for many years and David Nicholls adaptations are extraordinary.”
There’s no premiere date yet, the project is looking for the director and is supposedly starting to film this August.
