Grammy-Nominated Songwriter and Producer, Sophie Xeon, Falls to her Death in Greece

Sophie Xeon – a Scottish-born artist known in the entertainment industry as Sophie – died early in the morning on January 30, 2021, after she lost her balance from an undisclosed height in her Athens residence. According to her record label’s statement, Sophie was watching the splendor of the full moon around 4 am when she lost her footing and plunged to her death, NY Daily News reports.

“A tragic accident has taken the life of our talented and amazing Sophie,” the label stated on Twitter. “A moon watching endeavor quickly turned tragic when Sophie lost her footing and fell just a few hours ago.”

Sophie’s publicist also announced that the accident occurred in the artist’s house in Athens, Greece. The late musician and producer was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was a prominent advocate for the rights of trans people, later identifying as a trans too. Sophie was a co-producer on Madonna’s track “Bitch, I’m Madonna.” The artist also worked with other entertainers including Charli XCX.

Sophie had a Grammy nomination for her first album “Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides,” which the experimental pop-artist released in 2018. Her publicist described Sophie as an artist whose unconventional style helped to shape the past ten years in music, CNN writes.

“Sophie’s style, creativity, emotion, and ingenuity is something that made her one of the most prominent artists of the past ten years,” the artist’s publicist stated in their announcement. “Sophie passed a statement of freedom and liberty through music production and her style of music.”

Following the announcement of her death, some of Sophie’s colleagues paid their tributes, describing the death as a terrible loss to the industry. One of the artists, U.K singer, Sam Smith paid his tribute on Twitter, describing Sophie as an angel and an icon. Other artists who have paid their tributes include, French artist, Christine, and the Queens, and Erok Alka, producer and disc jockey.

The artist’s publicist urged members of the public to honor the family’s need for privacy during these hard times.

Sophie identified as a trans advocate before and after coming out as a transgender. During a 2018 interview, the artist told reporters that the decision to become transgender was made to “align the body, soul, and spirit” and do away with burdens placed by society to identify as one thing or the other.
