The Kardashians are now standing with Planned Parenthood. The sisters were spotted walking into a Planned Parenthood clinic in West Los Angeles on Thursday. The reality stars learned about the organization and then took Instagram to show some support.
This comes as President Trump’s administration is passing a bill that affects health care services offered by nonprofit organizations, specifically Planned Parenthood.
Standing up for a good cause
The Kardashians aren’t exactly known for their political activism, but we’re living crazy times.
Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe were spotted holding hands as they walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic in West Los Angeles.
The Kardashian‘s visit goal was to find out how to raise awareness for the non-profit organization and how they can contribute in the future. The visit was filmed for their E! series keeping Up With The Kardashians.During the visit, the trio met the staff members and learned about the organization’s services.
Their visit came one week after the Republican majority in the House fo Representatives voted to repeal Obamacare and pass the American Health Care Act. This way the Senate could cut out funds for Planned Parenthood and take away insurance for over 24 million people.
On Friday, the sisters took Instagram to share a group photo with Planned Parenthood staff members and shared their experience.
“My sisters and I visited Planned Parenthood recently and learned that the House of Representatives forced through a bill that strips health care coverage from millions of people and raises health care costs, including Planned Parenthood patients.,” Kim captioned her Instagram post — adding a tearful emoji. “They are such an amazing place that provides so much to so many!”
Khloe shared the same pic on her Instagram on Friday, writing that “2.5MM rely on PP for care – birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing and so much more!”
The Kardashians are the newest addition to celebrities that stand with Planned Parenthood.
Erasing Obamacare
Earlier this month, the House of Representatives voted to cut funds for Planned Parenthood as part of the GOP’s American Health Care Act.
Even when the bill has yet to go through the Senate before passing, it would prevent Medicaid from reimbursing Planned Parenthood for preventive services which include birth control, sexually transmitted infection screenings and Pap smears. Republicans hold 52 Senate seats however GOP moderates have been outspoken against the bill.
The American Health Care Act bill will change the game by all means, not only affect Planned Parenthood. The bill also projects to cut premiums for the healthy but raise premiums for less-healthy Americans in a significant way, more than 750%.
The bill also exposes people with pre-existing conditions to prohibitively high premiums and deductibles. Finally, it would cut Medicaid spending by $880 billion and give $1 trillion tax cut over a decade for wealthiest Americans.
The American Health Care Act. would erase former President Barack Obama’s legacy, which passed in the House by a 217-203 party-line tally. Not a single Democrat has signaled support for Trump’s administration Health Care act.
If being passed it would directly affect about 2-5 million people that rely on the non-profit organization for health care. The decision is based on religious grounds, as Planned Parenthood offers abortions.
Standing with Planned Parenthood
Kim had previously backed democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton in the 2016 election and revealed she was pro-choice.
Now the sisters joined the conversation and backed Planned Parenthood, just like many others celebrities. In the wake of the election stars like Charlize Theron, Lena Dunham, Anna Paquin, Jennifer Lawrence, Chelsea Handler, Sara Bareilles, Lily Collins, Sophia Bush, Scarlet Johanson and America Ferrara have raised their voices as celebrities and backed the non-profit organization.
Many of them participated in the Women’s March last January and brought awareness to the work of Planned Parenthood. During March’s Pink Out Day social media campaign celebrities also stood with Planned Parenthood. “We’ll never stop fighting for our health, rights, and communities,” wrote Elizabeth Banks.
“I believe in a woman’s right to safe, affordable, accessible, and legal reproductive health care,” tweeted Emily Ratajkowski. “That’s why I #standwithPP.”
Katy Perry has been outspoken about the importance of the organization and even donated $10,000 to it.
She said, “I am making a public donation to Planned Parenthood for the teenage me, who made several visits to first a clinic in Santa Barbara and then Los Angeles, CA to educate myself on my sexual health, a subject I had little to no information on because of my sheltered upbringing,” she shared.
“I had no idea how things worked down there and had no idea how to make a plan for them,” Perry continued. “Planned Parenthood educated me on my body and my reproductive health so that I could focus on my dreams and using my voice until I knew the timing was right for me to make a plan to have a family.”
