Puerto Rico’s Somos ‘One Voice’ Was Held Successfully This Weekend

Jennifer Lopez and beau Alex Rodriguez hosted the ‘One Voice: Somos Live’ on Saturday. The event simultaneously held in Miami and Los Angeles gathered celebrities to raise funds for hurricane Maria relief.

Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez, Jamie Foxx, Edgar Ramirez, Heidi Klum, Bruno Mars, Ellen DeGeneres and more were part of the huge telethon.

One Voice: Somos Live! coming together to help

One Voice: Somos Live telethon was held on Saturday, the Universal Studios Lot in Los Angeles and at Marlins Park in Miami.

Jennifer Lopez was joined by her beau, Alex Rodriguez, and ex-husband Marc Anthony, to host the live disaster relief telethon, which aired on NBC and Univision.

The ‘One Voice’ telethon aimed to raise awareness and gather donations for Puerto Rico, which remains devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Viewers were requested to dial in for a chance to donate to Hurricane Maria relief efforts in Puerto Rico while they speak to one of the numerous celebrities who were present at the heartfelt event.

Jennifer Lopez not only hosted the event herself but delivered quite a performance of several of her hit tracks as she pledged to raise at least one million to donate to Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Mexico.

“Tonight, we are all here as one voice, to declare loudly and clearly in English and Spanish to every man woman and child in Puerto Rico and beyond that, you are not forgotten, you are not alone,” she said.

“We are all here to help, not just because you are Americans but also because you are family, familia.”

“This disaster hits very close to home, we will never forget those terrifying days where many of us could not find our friends and family, and hear their beautiful voices,” added the star.

Proceeds will be distrubuted in various organizations

All proceeds gathered by the telethon will be distributed to those working on relief efforts, specifically: Feeding America, Save the Children, Habitat for Humanity, Unidos for Puerto Rico, United Way, Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Fund and UNICEF.

Once the telethon concluded, Lopez took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the emotional event.

“#SomosLive tonight was soooo amazing!! Thank you so much to everyone who participated and donated! The phone lines are open all weekend! Call in!! Gracias!!!” Lopez wrote.

The ‘One Voice: Somos Live! the event marked the first time in history that the two leading Spanish language networks came together to simulcast programming.

Star-studded celebrities event

Aside from the popular host, Jennifer Lopez, the event was filled with celebrities set to help in the kind gesture of raising awareness over the hurricane Maria relief efforts.

Manning the phones were several celebrities, some of Lopez’ close friends, including Kim Kardashian, Bethenny Frankel, Jamie Foxx and Heidi Klum. Also, there were Edgar Ramirez, Zoe Saldana, Ciara, Wilmer Valderrama, and more.

Musical performances in Los Angeles included stars Lopez, Demi Lovato, Maroon 5, Ricky Martin, Gwen Stefani and took the stage. While in Mami Latin superstars like Marc Anthony, Daddy Yankee, Gente De Zona, took to the stage.

Also, there were appearances from Marisa Tomei, Debra Messing, and Ellen DeGeneres, who also shared their efforts to raise money for Puerto Rico on social media.

Something personal

Prior to the event on Saturday, Jennifer Lopez opened up about how the event came to be.

“Right when the hurricane hit Puerto Rico, Marc and I got on the phone and started talking about what we could do,” Lopez said.

“Alex was right next to me and he started spitballing things we could do. From there, we just started organizing as many people as we could in our specific areas and pulled this thing together.”

“Everybody’s been so receptive and just ‘What can we do? How can we help?’ It just restores your faith that there are so many good people in this world that want to help each other,” said Lopez who personally called almost every single star invited to perform or make an appearance.

“That’s what the message of the night is. We’re here, we’re here for you, you’re not forgotten in Puerto Rico.”

“This is my new full-time job,” Lopez added about putting the program together, laughing.

“It’s been crazy, but it’s a passion project. When you want to do something, you can do it! Everybody has stepped up to the plate to help pull this off.”

Lopez also revealed they got a lot of help from her ex Marc Anthony and said that teaming up with him was a no-brainer.

“There’s just no question about it when it comes to things like this. The truth is, we are all one. We are all family. We are doing this because it’s the right thing to do, ” she said about simultaneously working with her ex-husband and boyfriend.

“Our community needs us right now, and we are very aware that we are leaders in our community. If we step out and do something, hopefully, people will follow and do the same.”
