2017 MTV EMA: All You Need To Know About This Year’s Show

The Show Honored Iconic Band’s And Featured A Chiller Look On The Red Carpet

The 2017 MTV European Music Awards were celebrated on Sunday night at London. The show took the SSE Arena, Wembley and delivered over the top performances and a musical comeback.

The show was hosted by Rita Ora and it honored Irish band U2 as living legends with the MTV Global Icon Award.

Rita Ora’s Outfit Was The Highlight Of The Night

The 2017 MTV European Awards kicked off the night with the usual red carpet show, only this time the night host delivered quite low-key ensemble.Rita Ora showed up at the red carpet donning a white bathrobe featuring a thigh-high slit. She also wore a towel wrapped around her head.

Ora completed her outfit with glamorous accessories, including diamonds necklace and earring and heels. The seemingly low-key-comfy outfit is actually part of the Spring/Summer ’18 collection of Palomo Spain, an androgynous menswear line that was also behind the spectacular gown Beyoncé wore in the first public appearance picture with the twins.

Sunday’s event marked the awards return to London for the first time since 1996, making locally breed singer Rita Ora the perfect fit for the job.Rita, who took the stage with the one of a kind look, kept things moving and actually also served as a performer with two songs.

This year the event didn’t deliver the usual unscripted-feeling moments like in previous years. Meaning, there was no equivalent of Kanye West‘s stage crash in 2006 after losing or Miley Cyrus smoking a joint in Amsterdam in 2013.

The EMAs are held in a different European city each year, with winners selected by fans across the continent. Next year’s ceremony will be held in Bilbao, Spain.

Quite an animated night

The night opened with a clip of Eminem performing his new single ‘Walk on Water’ in a London pub. Only to later on revealed the rapper emerging onstage in jeans and a black hoodie to perform the slow-burning number live.

Singer Skylar Gray filled in on the duet duties Beyoncé performed on the recording, while a 20 piece orchestra delivered the music.

Throughout the night performances kept up with the awesome scenery, including Shawn Mendes rocking the audience inside a constantly-changing lightbox while, earlier, British artist Stormzy took to the stage from the sunroof of a police squad car with emergency lights blazing.

However, the entrance of the night definitely went to Travis Scott, who flew on the back of an animatronic eagle over the heads of the audience while delivering performance of ‘Butterfly Effect.’Camila Cabello also took the stage to deliver a set of songs and ended her routine with a Havana-inspired poolside set. Cabello was surrounded by dancers rolling on while she sang ‘Havana.’

Performers ranged across genres and generations, and also included Kesha, Clean Bandit, rapper French Montana, and rockers The Killers.

Let’s Talk About The Winners Of The Night

Canadian Shawn Mendes resulted in the big winner of the night at the MTV EMA awards in London on Sunday night. He picked up the best song award for ‘There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,’ and the Canadian also went home with the awards for best artist and biggest fans.

Other winners included Zayn for Best Look, Camila Cabello for Best Pop, Dua Lipa for Best New Artist. Hailee Steinfeld won Best Push and The Chainsmokers won Best World Stage.

Also, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Humble’ won Best Video, Ed Sheeran won ‘Best Live, David Guetta won Best Electronic, and Coldplay took home Best Rock, while Thirty Seconds to Mars took home Best Alternative.

Eminem not only made his musical comeback but took home Best Hip Hop, which definitely took him by surprise since he has only released a song this year. “I don’t know how I got this because I haven’t had an album out in a few years,” he said.

The night also marked the celebration of Irish band U2, who played an MTV-sponsored concert in London’s Trafalgar Square the previous night. Starting with ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday,’ the band played a string of their most famous hits, including ‘One and Pride (In The Name of Love).’ They then debuted their new single ‘Get Out Of Your Own Way.’

On Sunday night, the band received the Global Icon award by the hand of Jared Leto, who said “U2 changed my life.” “Their songs are prayers, their concerts a church. They challenge us, they inspire us,” he said. The Irish band dedicated the award to label boss Chris Blackwell of Island Records, who signed them almost 40 years ago.

So four Irish guys showed up in Trafalgar Square last night. We played under Admiral Nelson’s statue. That’s a big deal if you’re an Irish guy,” drummer Larry Mullen Jr. told the audience after the band accepted their award.
