Chilling trailer for a chilling killer

‘The Snowman’ novel by Jo Nesbø has been compared to a rollercoaster ride and if the trailer is any indication, we’re all going to be stoked once ‘The Snowman’ hits theaters on October 20.

As we come closer to the release date, Universal Studios released the first trailer for the upcoming thriller, and you can say goodbye to the good ol’ Frosty the Snowman.

The trailer shows us a detective investigating the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter. The experienced detective fears an elusive serial killer may be active again as the killer leaves a snowman as a clue.

And so the game begins.

With the help of a brilliant recruit, the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one. Hoping to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.

The film was entirely shot on location in Norway, in the cities of Oslo and Bergen and the area of Rjukan.

The movie stars Michael Fassbender as the detective and Rebecca Ferguson as the new recruit. Also starring in the film are, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons.

The crew

The film was directed by Swedish Tomas Alfredson and produced by Working Title. Nesbo, Niclas Salomonsson, Martin Scorsese, Alfredson, Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger served as executive producer for the thriller.

‘The Snowman’ is set to hit theaters on October 20th, 2017, just in time for Halloween.

There will be plenty of competition for movies set to terrify audiences. Including the big screen remake of Stephen King‘s ‘IT‘, the ‘Leatherface’ prequel, and the return of Netflix‘s hit show ‘Stranger Things’.

But ‘The Snowman’ appears to be in a class of its own. And if its’ half as terrifying as ‘Let the Right One In’, horror fans will be in for a serious treat.

A first class roller coaster ride

‘The Snowman’ is a 2007 novel by Norwegian crime-writer Jo Nesbø. It is the seventh entry in his 12 part Harry Hole series that spans over 20 years.

The first series novel, ‘The Bat,’ was published in 1997 and translated into English only in 2012.

Harry Hole is the main character in a series of crime novels written by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø in which Oslo plays the main role, not only as the place where the story develops but adding more to it.

Hole is a brilliant and driven detective with unorthodox methods, a classic loose cannon in the police force. He’s recognized amongst his colleagues because of his role in the solving the case of a serial killer in Australia. Hole is one of few in the force who has undergone special training in police interrogation techniques and firearms by the FBI.

Once Alfred Hitchcock talked about people taking a roller-coaster ride – how they would scream going down the hill, and laugh when they were finished,” Thomas Kaufmann wrote about the series.

Some people like to be entertained in this way, Hitch said, and he was just a fellow who built roller coasters. The Snowman is a first-class roller-coaster ride.”

Getting the Hollywood treatment

The film adaptation of the novel ‘The Snowman’ was first announced in 2013. At the time director Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the film.

In 2014, Tomas Alfredson was hired to direct and in 2015, Michael Fassbender and Rebeca Ferguson were cast in the film to play the lead roles.

But, ‘The Snowman’ is the second Nesbø’s novels to get the Hollywood treatment in recent years after the 2011 film ‘Headhunters.’ And seems like Hollywood is going for more.

In 2016 it was announced that there are also plans to adapt ‘The Son’ as a film. Directed by Denis Villeneuve with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role.

A further announcement in September 2016, revealed that, after a gap of four years, in May 2017 Harvill Secker would publish a new Jo Nesbø novel entitled ‘The Thirst’, again featuring maverick policeman Harry Hole.

On the return of Harry Hole in The Thirst, Jo Nesbo said,

“I was always coming back to Harry; he is my soul mate. But it is a dark soul, so it is – as always – both a thrill and a chilling, emotionally exhausting experience. Harry and the story make it worth the sleepless nights.”

But not only the Harry Hole series is being adapted to the big screen.

‘Blood On Snow,’ q book from the author’s ‘The Olav Johansen’ series, is also being adapted for the screen. The announcement came on April 4, it was announced that Tobey Maguire will direct the adaptation of the novel.

And, on April 5, it was announced that Baltasar Kormakur will direct the adaptation of ‘I Am Victor.’
