The new trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ dropped on Monday night, and people are freaking out. The clip gives fans a glimpse into the anticipated adventure that arrived on December 15.
Along with the anticipated trailer, the studio graced fans unveiling the film’s poster. And while that’s all too exciting, it was the “porgs” what really broke the Internet with fans and people loosing it over the new cute creature.
The upcoming adventure
The new trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ debuted in dramatic fashion during Monday Night Football halftime. The clip was introduced by fireworks and Stormtroopers marching onto Chicago’s Soldier Field as the preview played onscreen.
The clip opens with a look into Kylo Ren’s turn to the Dark Side as Supreme Leader Snoke, a shadowy evil in ‘The Force Awakens’, tells the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special.”
And that’s just the beginning.
The preview then shifts to Rey’s training with Luke Skywalker, where her power of the Force amazes the Jedi, who says, “I’ve seen this raw strength once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.”
However, the biggest revelation might be that the trailer insinuates that Kylo Ren hesitating about whether to destroy a spaceship carrying his mother, the now-General Leia Organa.
But, while the stories of Kylo Ren and Rey once again take center stage in the new trailer, the latest preview also shows Finn facing off in a battle against his former commander Captain Phasma. It also shows the first look at Supreme Leader Snoke that isn’t an ominous projection.
Monday also delivered the theatrical poster of the upcoming movie, which places a hooded Luke Skywalker hovering above of a lightsaber battle between Rey and Kylo Ren. Leia, Finn, Poe Dameron, Chewbacca and R2-D2 and C-3PO are also housed in the image.
In addition to the second trailer and the poster, Star Wars also opened up ticket preordering for The Last Jedi ahead of its December 15th release.
Internet loosing over the “porgs”
It’s safe to say that Monday was a huge day for Star Wars fans with a brand new trailer of the upcoming adventure, the film’s poster and the opened ticket pre-order. And while that’s pretty much enough to say that people freaked out by all these things happening, the Internet really lost it over a new creature
And while that’s pretty much enough to say that people freaked out by all these things happening, the Internet really lost it over a new adorable creature, the “porgs.”
‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ short minutes were enough to unleash the “porg mania.”
The little creature, a Furby-type species native to the world where Rey and Luke Skywalker met at the end of ‘The Force Awakens” and now on the new trailer, soon caused tweets, memes, and fan art taking the internet.
Lucasfilm has been touting porgs as the new it Star Wars creature for a few months now.
It all started back in July when a D23 behind-the-scenes video a showed the little bugger in development. Which was quickly followed by a piece on StarWars.com that touted “We know only one truth: We love porgs” and offered up a full explanation of their cuteness from Lucasfilm story group’s Pablo Hidalgo. “
“Porgs are native to Ahch-To,” he explained.
“In many ways, they’re the Star Wars version of puffins. They build nests. They can fly. Their babies are called porglets. You fall into those deep, soulful eyes. I think a lot of people are going to want a porg as a pet.”
Now, everybody wants a porg.
Trailers and warnings
Monday’s trailer was the second one Lucasfilm released in promotion of the anticipated movie.
The first ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ trailer released months ago, opened with Rey practicing her lightsaber skills and use of the Force.
It also showed Kylo Ren’s battered mask and glimpses of Finn, Admiral Leia Organa, and Poe Dameron.
The preview ended dramatically with Luke Skywalker ominously saying in voiceover, “I only know one truth: It’s time for the Jedi to end.”
Prior to the second trailer’s debut, director Rian Johnson took to Twitter to write “I [am] legitimately torn. If you want to come in clean, absolutely avoid it. But it’s gooooood….”
Johson had previously advised Star Wars to eschew all trailers and promotional materials associated with the sequel
Mark Hamill nodded to Jonson’s advise and similarly issued a warning to Star Wars diehards: “I fully endorse this @rianjohnson endorsement: AVOID EVERYTHING YOU CAN FROM NOW TILL DECEMBER!!!!! #WordsOfWisdom #WellWorthWaitingForVIII”
‘The Last Jedi’ will be followed in May 2018 by the Ron Howard-directed anthology film dedicated to Han Solo.
The final chapter in the new trilogy,‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘, arrives in December 2019 helmed by director J.J. Abrams back on board after producers parted ways with Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow.
