Taking on Broadway

The Grammy-winning artist will make his Broadway debut as Dr. Pomatter in Waitress this fall.

Jason Mraz is joining the cast of Broadway‘s ‘Waitress’. The singer will play the part of Dr. Pomatter in a 10-week run beginning Nov. 3, producers revealed. The role was originated by actor Drew Gehling.

Mraz previously recorded the Waitress tracks ‘Bad Idea’ and ‘You Matter to Me’ with the musical’s composer, Sara Bareilles, for her ‘What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress’ album released in 2015. Bareilles also had her own 10-week run on Broadway, taking over the show’s lead role from late March through June.

‘Waitress’ tells the story of small-town pie maker Jenna, who’s newly pregnant but unhappy with her marriage. She has an affair with her new ob-gyn, Dr. Pomatter, and sets her sights on winning the grand prize in a pie contest in an effort to change her life.

The musical is based on the 2007 film, written by Adrienne Shelly, and currently stars Betsy Wolfe as Jenna. Performances take place at New York’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

‘Waitress’ made headlines when it opened back in 2016 for being the first Broadway show with an all-female creative team. The show is launching its national tour this fall as well, beginning in Cleveland in October.
