Is that time of the year when we evaluate the worst, but also the best. This year many movies were premiered, some we were long expecting, while others turned out to be better than we expected them to be.
It was a good year for movies, and in case you didn’t have the chance to watch them all, here’s a list of the very best of 2016, if you want to catch up with the best of this year that is almost ending.
15. Deadpool.
The smart humor of this crazy superhero definitely nailed it this year, plus Ryan Reynolds’ performance was perfect. Written and directed by Tim Miller, the movie was a total hit, raising over $782 million. Despite being aggressive and raw, the story had a great narrative and presents a completely different hero. It was defenitely a favorite for the audience.
14. Finding Dory.
This year, Pixar premiered the movie of Nemo’s funniest little fish. Dory was a long expected movie, not only for little kids but also for grown-ups. Directed by Andrew Stanton, and starring Ellen DeGeneres, the movie made the charts raising over $1 billion. In this adventure, Dory goes after clues to find out where she comes from.
13. Arrival.
The story has a dual narrative, in one hand, it follows the alien invasion of the Earth, and on the other the grieving process of a despaired mother, who happens to be a linguist. Is a beautiful way of realizing how language helps us to connect with everything. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Amy Adams, and Jeremy Renner, the movie raised over $178 million.
12. Hell or High Water.
Following the story of two brothers who get in a bank rob to save their family farm, the movie faces the trouble of life choices and rightness and wrongness. Directed by David Mackenzie and with the incredible performances of Ben Foster, Chris Pine, and Jeff Bridges. The movie raised only $31 million but is more than worth watching.
11. Doctor Strange.
It follows the story of a surgeon who suffers a terrible accident, that changes his life completely and becomes a superhero. Starring the incredible Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdams, directed by Scott Derrickson, the movie was a total blockbuster raising over $641 million.
10. The Shallows.
The fierce fight for the life of a surfer who encounters a scary creature of the sea. Nothing like a shark and a girl to make a god thriller. Starring beautiful Blake Lively, who happens to surf way too good, and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the movie raised $119 million.
9. Everybody wants some!
It follows the story of a group of college baseball players, the movie reconnects us with the most youthful desires and the essence of life. The comedy set in the early 80s was directed by Richard Linklater and features Will Brittain, Zoey Deutch, and Ryan Guzman.
8. The Nice Guys.
This movie will take you back to the 70s; it follows a pair of private detectives that investigate the disappearance of a girl. The comedy thriller was directed by Shane Black and features Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, who have a great chemistry on screen.
7. Manchester by The Sea.
Touching story. The movie follows a family drama and portrays how family remains after all. With really strong feelings and characters incredibly real and well played, Kenneth Lonergan delivers a great story. The movie has raised $6 million so far.
6. Silence.
The story that follows Portuguese Jesuits spreading Christianity in Japan treats some of the most complex issues in human life, the faith and the meaning of God. This splendid movie directed by the one and only Martin Scorsese and it stars Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver. The film has raised over $51 million.
5. Elle.
This is a tough one. The movie follows a woman who is raped in her home and how she deals with it. Entering into the world of sexual politics, Paul Verhoeven presents one of the toughest and most complex movies of the year. Featuring a glorious Isabelle Huppert, the movie has raised $7,5 million.
4. La la land.
The musical portrays a couple who simply loves life, despite not turning as they expect, showing us the beauty of living and reminding us of the importance of dreaming. Damien Chazelle brings one of the sweetest movies of the year. Featuring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the movie has raised $300 thousand.
3. Loving.
The touching story of real-life Virginian couple Richard and Mildred Loving, played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, who fought to make their interracial love legal in the 60s, is a beautiful reminder of the importance of standing up for what you believe in. Directed by Jeff Nichol, the movie raised $6,1 million.
2. Paterson.
Following the story of a bus driver who writes poetry in his free time, the movie reminds us the importance of following your heart and doing what you love. The excellent performance of Adam Driver will bring you to tears. The movie directed by Jim Jarmusch will premiere on December the 28th but looks good already.
1. Moonlight.
This one is a work of art. The movie follows the story of a mother and her son and portrays how life sometimes doesn’t turn out as you expect it. Is a wake up call. With the amazing performances of André Holland, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, and Janelle Monáe. The excellent work of Barry Jenkins as the director has raised $10 million.
