After the legendary film, these Mean Girls are taking over Broadway

The original Mean Grils film was written by Tina Fey and premiered in 2004. The teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters is based in part on Rosalind Wiseman’s book, Queen Bees, and Wannabes.

The iconic movie that portrayed high school life like no other, premiered with an all-star cast including, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan and Amanda Seyfried.

However, a film wasn’t enough for Tina Fey and for a while, she danced around the idea of a Broadway musical adaptation.Which is finally happening, during the Tribeca Film Festival, the actress said that she’s finally full time working with her husband to put the show together.

Tina, the creator of Netflix’s hit The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, found the time to work on it due to Ellie Kemper’s pregnancy, which conveniently fit between shooting seasons of the show.

“We’re working on the musical adaptation, and thanks to Ellie Kemper’s pregnancy, we have this whole summer to work on it,” she told a packed audience at the festival.

On Wednesday, the actress said things are moving fast on The Tonight Show. “I mean, I’ll probably come back here like five more times before we actually come to Broadway,” she joked with Jimmy Fallon, “but it’s a real thing now.”

The first performance is scheduled for sometime between March 10 and March 12.

Tina Fey is writing the book and her husband, Jeff Richmond is on board too. He’s composing the music while Nell Benjamin, who worked on the Legally Blonde musical, is writing the lyrics. Tony Award winner Casey Nicholas is directing the anticipated school drama.Lorne Michael and Stuart Thompson are producing the show.
