On Thursday, Netflix announced that its original series ‘Sense8’ is coming back. Well, sort of. The show will get a two-hour finale expected to air in 2018. The news cheered up the shows bummed crowd that was still recovering from the cancellation news.
Series co-creator Lana Wachowski also took social media to share the news, as she thanked fans for all the love and support.
Sense8 fans are getting closure
The fans have spoken, and the canceled Netflix series “Sense8” is coming back next year for a two-hour final episode.
In a video posted on social media, the characters from the series reunite and sing along the iconic song “What’s Up” by 4 Non-Blondes. Midway through the video, the following words appear onscreen: “It’s happening. Two-hour finale episode. Tell your cluster.”
In addition, series co-creator Lana Wachowski posted a statement online that reads in part, “The passionate letters, the petitions, the collective voice that rose up like the fist of Sun to fight for this show was beyond what anyone was expecting.”
It’s something Wachowski fully attributes to the power of the show’s fandom. “
“By myself, there was nothing I could do,” Wachowski writes in the letter. “But just as the characters in our show discover that they are not alone, I too have learned that I am not just me. I am also a we,” she noted.
Wachowski did note that Netflix was amongst the show’s fans: “Believe me, they love the show as much as we do, but the numbers have always been challenging,” Wachowski wrote. Adding that the streaming giant was able to reverse its decision on this is a testament to its devotion.
A final goodbye happening
The streaming service canceled the series after two seasons at the beginning of June, making it one of the few Netflix originals to get canceled.
Other recent cancellations include “The Get Down,” “Marco Polo,” “Bloodline,” and “Girlboss.”
The series was acclaimed by exploring and portraying the story of eight strangers who become mentally and emotionally linked. Despite a growing and passionate family of fans, audience numbers couldn’t keep up with production costs. Netflix said season two cost US$9 million per episode. Finally, season 3 was canceled on June 1.
The return of the science-fiction to the screens in 2018, offers hope of a resolution to the canceled series. Especially after the second season cliffhanger.
We can now look forward to 2018 to find out what happened to Wolfgang, if Riley and Will will work out, and if there will be time to squeeze in one last orgy.
